If You Were Me by Sheila O’Flanagan
This wonderful novel by best-selling author Sheila O’Flanagan is a perfect tale for those who had a first love. The story starts in Seville with the main character Carlotta’s day not quite going how she planned. This throws her perfectly structured life and meticulous organised world into somewhat of a spin and results in her running into her childhood sweetheart.
I love how Sheila describes the main character ‘Carlotta was a really fun character to write, because she’s so strong externally but internally she’s really struggling. She doesn’t think of herself as a romantic person, but suddenly ends up doing things based on emotion rather than reason’. I think lots of people will be able to connect with Carlotta for these very reasons. Trying to exude confidence and the air of control on the outside whilst you have inner turmoil and tricky decisions to make. We’ve also all been in the situation where you have to make a choice between head and heart, and that’s a toughie.
The story takes you on a beautiful descriptive journey through Seville, so you not only fall in love with Carlotta, you also fall in love with the city its self. I was ready to jump on a plane, find the nearest tapas restaurant and watch some sultry, sexy flamenco dancing.
The book takes you on a number of twists and turns throughout the story and is a beautiful read. What I like most about the book is not only is the main character so likeable but the other characters are too. It’s an all-round great read, where your head and heart will want different things for Carlotta at different stages of the story.
Definitely one to add to your summer reading list as this book sizzles from start to finish.
