Keeping gym workouts fun
I’ve been a regular gym goer for the best part of 10 years. I admit my relationship with the gym has come and gone. There have been times where I have simply got bored with going to the gym and doing the same workout, day after day, week after week. And that was my mistake.
At this time of the year a lot of people join a gym as a New Year’s resolution. Without a plan about how to keep workouts interesting, a lot of people will go for a month or two and then will get bored. Their attendance will lapse and later they cancel their membership after their initial term. I’ve got a few handy hints on how to keep your workout interesting.
Set goals and challenges
Some of the best workouts come from trying to beat a personal best or working up to a difficult challenge. I’ve done a few and one of the more memorable ones was the climbing challenge.
Each time you visit the gym, you climb the equivalent number of steps as climbing up a famous tall building. Start with a building with only a few hundred steps and work up to a building with a few thousand. If you’ve got buddies at the gym, challenge them to see who can make it up to the top first.
We also did a triathlon challenge, you can read more about the challenge.
Don’t just stick to the same machines
One of the biggest mistakes newbies make is that they go to the gym and workout on the cross-trainer for an hour an evening. I know this because I can never get on the cross-trainer in January. The cross-trainer gets pretty boring after 20 – 30 minutes and really boring, day after day. Mix your workout up with some weights, some floor work (sit ups, press ups), get the Swiss ball out and try doing some press ups whilst your feet are up on the ball. There are loads of ideas out there. Do some research before you head to the gym and try out some of the moves. If you are stuck for inspiration, join a class. Something like a toning class or circuits should provide you with some new ideas.
Get an app
If you find yourself struggling for ideas, then download an app. There are lots of free ones as well as ones that cost just a couple of pounds. Not only will they give you lots of new ideas, but as you’ve downloaded them to your phone, you’ll have them there, when you can’t quite remember how to do that ‘move with the weird bendy leg thing’. Some of the best free apps that I have tried are Gain Fitness – Cross Trainer and Sworkit. Download them and give them a go. I’d love to hear if you use any others that I can try as I’m always looking for new workouts.
