As part of my Dad’s 70th birthday celebrations we all went for brunch at Plum and Spilt Milk, located just by St Pancras in London.

It’s an interesting name for a restaurant isn’t it? The name is actually inspired by the distinctive livery worn by the dining cars of the Flying Scotsman and the look of the restaurant is inspired by the rolling stock too. Not in a cheesy, themed way, but in a soft, subtle and elegant way. There was a lot of wood panelling and many photos on the wall. They also had glass lampshade around the light bulbs, which is a look I really like.

As I mentioned, we went for brunch, but they do offer a full menu including lunch, all day a la carte, a Sunday roast and a menu called Pudding Pairing, which sounds delicious, doesn’t it?

Saturday brunch is served from 11am to 3pm and includes dishes such as smoked salmon with scrambled eggs and granary toast, eggs benedict, smoked haddock kedgeree with a poached egg, chilli and coriander. There were so many delicious sounding dishes to choose from, it was hard to choose.

Around our table, we went for a variety of dishes, including the Mey selections’ Angus hamburger and the full English. I opted for the eggs royale. It’s one of my all-time favourites – I love smoked salmon, but my other half isn’t keen so I rarely buy it just for me.

You can choose to have a brunch cocktail with your food if you wish. They offer breakfast martinis, bucks fizz, bellinis and bloody Marys. I choose a good old fashioned cup of tea, but some of our party had cocktails and said they were very nice.

When the food arrived it was really well presented and looked delicious.

On my way to the bathroom, our lovely waiter from Plum and Spilt Milk approached me and asked me if he had overheard correctly that it was Dad’s 70th birthday. I confirmed it was. After our brunch some of my family wanted a sweet treat, so they ordered from the dessert menu. When the desserts came out, the restaurant had prepared four of their truffles on a plate and decorated it with a birthday message for my Dad. It was really lovely of them and my Dad was really chuffed they had made such a fuss of him.

Overall the food was delicious, the service impeccable and the restaurant really tastefully decorated. I would highly recommend Plum and Spilt Milk to others and would definitely go back again. Maybe for their pudding pairing menu!

Price wise, brunch dishes start at £8 and go up to £23. Breakfast cocktails are £8.50 and desserts are priced around the £8.50 mark. They do have a Saturday brunch deal where you can choose two dishes and enjoy them with a bottle Billecart-Salmon champagne. That’s £65 for a couple. Perfect for a special occasion.

Where have you been for brunch that you would recommend to others? Brunch is such a great meal – so many possibilities.
