Praia Do Lourenço
After a beautiful cliff side walk along the rugged edge of the Algarve coastline, my other half and I stumbled across this gem of a restaurant. We approached it from the beach, as that was the way we came across the cliffs, but if you were going specifically to visit this restaurant in the Algarve, you would come to it from a little track just a couple of miles from Vale de Parra.
On arrival we were greeted by a very friendly hostess who talked us through the fresh fish they had on offer. We were torn between the sea bass and the golden bream. The hostess suggested that we opt for the golden bream as this is a fish that wasn’t very easy to locate in the UK and we had likely had sea bass a number of times before. We were both in agreement with her logic so the golden bream was ours. She said the fish would be prepared and grilled in the kitchen and then served to us at the table. We choose chips and a salad as our side orders.
They were very accommodating about my other half’s request of not having the head attached when they served the fish – he’s a tad squeamish. They did smile in a kind way, even though they clearly found it funny that we had ordered the fresh fish in the first place.
We were seated at a prime table, overlooking the beautiful beach of Praia Do Lourenço. Taking in the golden sands of the coast below us. The beach underneath the restaurant was empty and the tide relatively high, so our souls were soothed by the intermittent breaking of the waves. It was heavenly.
We didn’t order any starters, but did order a bottle of Douro Valley Sauvignon Blanc which was served ice cold alongside some olives, cheese, bread and sardine pate. My other half commented that the cheese was a bit like port salut. The sardine pate on the bread was the perfect light starter.
Our waitress came over to announce our fish was ready and brought the side dishes. Then the fish was brought out and de-boned at our table. Yes it was brought out without the head attached, before you ask. The skill of the waitress whilst she was de-boning our fish was very impressive. She did this effortlessly and we were presented with a truly delicious looking golden bream.
The bream looked good, but did it taste good? The answer to this is emphatically a big yes. It was seasoned in olive oil and salt and it was grilled to perfection. We took our time, savouring the salty fish with the oil and herb dressed salad and the impeccably fried chips. I honestly couldn’t fault the food, service or location.
Our experience at Praia Do Lourenço Restaurant was one of a perfect lunch, after a gorgeous walk along the rambling Algarve cliff edge. When we set out with a rucksack packed with sun cream, water and a phone, we didn’t know where we might end up, but it couldn’t have been planned better.
If you are in the Algarve. I highly recommend you enjoy a cliff top walk along the coastline as the views are stunning and try and end up at the Praia Do Lourenço beach and restaurant. If we were staying longer, I would have liked to go back at sunset. You also should be aware, it was pretty pricey for lunch. Our golden bream alone was €55 by the time you add the sides, drinks and a tip we had spent €90. So a pretty expensive lunch but in our eyes well worth it.
