Self Care and Divorce

We often don’t put enough time aside for ourselves to really care for our mental health. Some think that ‘just getting on with it’ will help repair emotional damages, but all this does is push down feelings that could resurface in future or come out in ways we don’t intend.

It’s better to face things head-on, and one way to do this is to set time aside for self-care. Here are eight self-care tips for parents going through this tricky time…

Regular Exercise

Regular exercise has been proven to reduce stress levels, anxiety and improve overall wellness. It’s also a great excuse to get out and maybe meet new people. It doesn’t mean jumping into an Olympic training routine; simple light exercise daily is enough to make improvements.

Healthy Eating

Eating well alongside light exercise is the best way to optimise wellbeing. This doesn’t mean getting a ‘revenge body’ or doing crazy restrictive diets. It’s as simple as making better decisions when it comes to what you’re putting in your body.

Try not to buy into any fad diets, as they often don’t work and can make you feel worse, as they’re designed to play on your insecurities. If you’re already quite a healthy person and want to set some goals, why not look into the benefits of a personal trainer to improve your knowledge?

Make Sleep A Priority

This might be easier said than done with children involved, but on occasions where you can get to sleep at a good time, you should. There are numerous benefits to getting more sleep, or even just a consistent sleep schedule, including reduced stress on the mind and body.

There are plenty of benefits of having more sleep including better heart health, improved memory, improved immune system, reduced stress, improved moods and improved focus.

Cook for Yourself

Perhaps you’re already someone who does a lot of cooking, but we often forget how therapeutic cooking can be. If you’re used to just banging food out in a rush, make more time to pay attention to the process of whatever you’re making,

Why not try out a new recipe? It’s also a great excuse to have friends over and have a needed catch-up to take your mind off your divorce.

Start A New Hobby

Starting a new hobby is a great way to try something new and possibly meet other people. Try googling clubs in your area to see what’s local to you. New hobbies could include:

  • Art class
  • Exercise class
  • Salsa or other dance clubs
  • Swimming
  • Pottery
  • Hiking
  • Yoga

Plan Something To Look Forward To

Planning something for the future, whether it’s a holiday on your own or with your children, can be a great way to move forward positively. Having something fun to look forward to can be a great pick me up on days where you’re feeling particularly down and need a reminder of things to come.

Seek Help And Advice
