The early years of the 21st century have been marked by a certain arrogance when it comes to public health. People – especially those in positions of power – often seem to assume that because we live in a clean, modern world, the kinds of things that wreaked havoc on the world just a hundred years ago no longer pose a real threat.

This is a collaborative post.

If we’ve learned anything in recent years, it’s just how disastrous that kind of approach to public health can be. From the inevitability of more pandemics to the importance of mental health, here’s what you need to know about public health hazards going forward.

Pandemics

The most obvious thing to mention in the context of 21st-century public health is the renewed risk posed by pandemics. While the COVID-19 pandemic was predicated as inevitable by most epidemiologists, almost no one took those predictions seriously. It’s just a moment of time before the next pandemic rears its head, and it’s imperative that we do more to prepare.

Waterborne disease

In recent years, we haven’t just seen the increasing prevalence of viral pandemics such as COVID-19, we’ve also seen an increase in waterborne disease outbreaks. In particular, there has been an alarming rise in the number of Legionnaires’ disease cases, especially in Europe and America.

These outbreaks are entirely unnecessary and result from a lack of preparation and lack of available solutions. By carrying out a Legionella risk assessment, and implementing the changes that your testers suggest, you should be able to keep these kinds of risks to an absolute minimum.

Mental health

While it’s true that in the West, many of us are now working far less physically strenuous jobs than we did a hundred years ago, in many cases, those tolls have been replaced by increases in mental stress. The result has been a massive explosion in mental health issues, across society.

It’s important that everyone starts to take these kinds of issues seriously. Mental health issues can be just as detrimental in terms of life experience and work capacity as physical health issues, and they must not be taken lightly.

Ongoing diligence

It’s important to recognise that we all have a stake in this fight, whether you’re a business owner or a medical professional. It’s critical that you stay on top of emerging health risks, both to ensure regulatory compliance and to look after your workforce.

There are a range of effective strategies available nowadays, the result of which means that mitigating these serious health risks is a relatively achievable goal. You need to make sure that you stay on top of the relevant risk management solutions available, looking at industry-specific journals to ensure you don’t miss anything crucial.

We hope that these public health hazards instil a positive level of caution going forward. It’s important that they’re taken seriously, but they shouldn’t become overly deterministic of where your energies go. By adopting smart, strategic solutions, you can ensure that these risks are mitigated with minimal effort on your behalf.
