Are you planning on exploring by camper van this winter? Travelling by camper van in winter is an absolutely incredible experience. You’ll see snow-covered landscapes and peaceful campsites and most of all you can enjoy cosy nights inside your van or cuddled up around a campfire.
However, winter camping comes with its challenges. To stay warm, safe, and comfortable, here are my suggestions for ten essential items to pack for your cold-weather camper trip.
Heated Blankets
Heated blankets are an absolute must when travelling by camper throughout the winter. They have come on so much and provide much-needed warmth in the colder days. Get yourself an electric blanket which is wireless and can be recharged – it’s so much more practical for van life.
Insulated Window Covers
Heat loss through windows can make your camper van feel like the Arctic. If you invest in insulated window covers, you’ll find these will help you to keep the heat inside your van, whilst also doing a good job of preventing condensation from forming inside. They also add an extra layer of privacy.
Portable Heater
A safe, reliable heat source is essential for winter camping. You’ll find that built-in heaters work well but it’s also a good idea to have a backup. Something like a propane or diesel heater (with proper ventilation) will ensure that you stay warm – even in extreme conditions. Electric space heaters are a great option if you have access to a hook-up.
Thermal Sleeping Bags and Blankets
You’ll find that even with heating, temperatures inside your motorhome will drop drastically at night. I’d suggest getting yourself a high-quality thermal sleeping bag and a couple of extra blankets. You’ll find that wool blankets and fleece-lined sleeping bags are particularly good at retaining warmth.
All-Weather Tyres and Snow Chains
In snowy or icy conditions, roads can be treacherous, so it’s a good idea to make sure you are equipped with all-weather or winter tyres on your camper van. Carrying snow chains is also a good idea when travelling in areas prone to snow or ice.
Moisture Absorbers
You’ll find that condensation can become a big problem in the winter. If you don’t address it, this can lead to dampness and mould inside your vehicle. Using moisture absorbers or dehumidifiers can help keep the air dry inside your camper.
Cold-Weather Clothing
Did you know that layering is key when spending time outdoors in the cold? Make sure you pack thermal base layers, wool socks, waterproof gloves, insulated jackets, and a good pair of winter boots. This gives you a good chance to stay warm during your trip.

Insulated Water Hose and Water Tank Heater
Water can easily freeze in the pipes and tanks of your camper so you probably want to have an insulated water hose and a small water tank heater. This will simply help prevent your water system from freezing and keep it functional during winter.
Emergency Kit
It’s always a good idea to be prepared for unexpected situations. Plan ahead and pack a winter emergency kit. This kit should include a first aid kit, torch, extra batteries, a shovel, an ice scraper, jump cable, and road flares. I’d also suggest carrying non-perishable food and extra drinking water.
Portable Power Bank and Solar Charger
In the colder months, there are shorter daylight hours. You’ll also find that you will use your heater more. Increased usage of heating will drain your camper’s battery more quickly. So if you carry a portable power bank or a solar charger, you’ll be equipped with a backup. This backup power is ideal for things like lights, phones, and GPS devices.
Travelling via camper van in the winter can create some amazing, once-in-a-lifetime memories, but only if you are well prepared. Including these essential items in your packing list will keep you warm, safe, and comfortable, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of winter landscapes without extra stress.
