If you’ve started looking at the ingredients in your cleaning products, wondering what your pans are coated with or questioning whether there might be a gentler alternative to something you use every day, you’re in the right place.

Welcome to my Low-Tox Living UK hub.

For me, low-tox living isn’t about throwing everything in the house away, spending a fortune on supposedly “clean” products or becoming frightened of everyday chemicals. It’s about making small, sensible swaps where they feel worthwhile.

As a mum of two young children, I’m particularly interested in the products we use regularly in our home. From what we cook our food in to what I use to wash our clothes and clean the kitchen.

I’ve created this page to bring all of my low-tox guides together in one place, with a particular focus on products and options that are actually available in the UK.

What Does Low-Tox Living Mean?

There isn’t one universally agreed definition of “low-tox living”, and you’ll often see terms such as non-toxic, natural, clean and chemical-free used online.

I prefer low-tox because it feels much more realistic.

Everything is made from chemicals, including water, so a completely “chemical-free” home isn’t possible, nor is it something I’m trying to achieve. Instead, I’m interested in looking at the products we use regularly and asking questions such as:

  • What is this made from?
  • Do I actually need it?
  • Is there a simpler alternative?
  • Could I reduce my exposure to ingredients I’d rather use less often?
  • Is there a better option available in the UK without it costing a fortune?

Sometimes I decide a swap is worthwhile. Sometimes I don’t. This section of my blog is about sharing what I discover along the way.

Low-Tox Cleaning & Laundry

Cleaning products are one of the easiest places to start because most of us use them every single week.

I’m looking at everything from laundry detergents and dishwasher tablets to sprays and other household cleaning products, including which alternatives perform well enough to make a permanent switch worthwhile.

Low-Tox Kitchen

The kitchen is another area where small changes can make a difference to the products and materials we use every day.

Here you’ll find my guides to things such as cookware, air fryers, food storage and kitchen equipment, with an emphasis on practical choices rather than replacing perfectly usable items simply for the sake of it.

Low-Tox Personal Care

Shampoo, deodorant, skincare, toiletries and other personal-care products are used directly on our bodies, often every day.

In this section I’ll be looking more closely at ingredients, investigating some of the claims made by brands and finding alternatives available to UK shoppers.

Low-Tox Family Home

Low-tox living can extend beyond the products under the kitchen sink.

From the materials we bring into our homes to the products we use around children, this section is where I’ll collect my research into creating a home that feels a little simpler and more considered.

Easy Low-Tox Swaps

You absolutely do not need to overhaul your entire home at once.

In fact, I think one of the easiest ways to approach low-tox living is simply to replace things differently when they run out or need replacing anyway.

That might mean choosing a different washing detergent next time you need one, replacing a worn-out frying pan with a different type of cookware or trying a simpler cleaning product once your current bottle is empty.

Those small changes gradually add up – without an enormous shopping bill or a cupboard full of perfectly good products heading for the bin.

Is Low-Tox Living Expensive?

It certainly can be, particularly when you start browsing products marketed specifically as “clean”, “natural” or “non-toxic”.

But it doesn’t have to be. Sometimes the low-tox option is actually the simpler option: buying fewer products, choosing something reusable, avoiding unnecessary fragrances or finding one product that can do several jobs.

Throughout my guides, I’ll try to include options at different price points and focus on products that are realistically available in the UK.

Where Should I Start?

Start with the things you use most. There’s little point worrying about an item you use twice a year while ignoring something you use every morning.

For one household, that might mean cookware. For another, it could be laundry detergent, food storage or cleaning sprays. Pick one area, do a little research and make a change if it feels worthwhile. That’s essentially how I’m approaching low-tox living in my own home, and I’ll continue adding everything I learn to this page.

Low-Tox Living Without the Fear

One thing I want this section of my blog to avoid is fear. It’s very easy to come across alarming posts online telling you that almost everything in your home is “toxic”. Often the reality is much more nuanced.

Where possible, my guides will look beyond marketing claims and explain why people may choose to avoid or reduce a particular ingredient or material, what the evidence actually says and what alternatives are available.

You can then decide whether making that particular swap matters to you.
