If you are trying to improve your cognition then there are many things you can do. One thing you shouldn’t do is sit at home all day doing nothing. This can lead to premature cognitive decline and nobody wants to be dealing with that if they don’t have to. There is so much advice and guidance out there on what is best for you and your brain, however, not everything will work for you. Check out the article below to see if you can find some things that you haven’t yet tried to improve your health.
This is a collaborative post.
Try Doing Puzzles
One thing you can do that is incredible for your brain is puzzles, this could be anything from crosswords to sudoku. Anything that gets you thinking and working on your brain is great and a step in the right direction. You can invest in puzzle books or you can take this journey online, however, be careful how much time you spend staring at a screen. Sometimes it is much better for you to pick up a pen and do them on paper.
If puzzles aren’t quite your thing or you don’t have the patience for them then how about games instead? We aren’t talking video games that have you staring at a screen for endless hours of the day, but mind puzzles. Ones that get you thinking and using parts of your mind that usually sit dormant for the most part. This could include games like solitaire, hearts, checkers, or even blackjack.
Stop Sitting In Front Of The TV All Day
One thing that can be detrimental to your mental health and cognitive development is sitting in front of the TV all day, everyday. While TV can be entertaining, it can destroy your grey matter that you need for memory and other cognitive activities. If you do insist on watching television then try to stick with the quiz shows rather than the draining reality shows. It can be tempting to become a couch potato but instead of this, head outside and get some fresh air.
Remain Socially Active
Finally, it is thought that those who socialise with friends at least twice a week are around 80%/ less likely to develop cognitive issues as they age, this can include conditions such as Alzheimers. That is likely because your family and friends can keep your mind occupied by having regular meaningful conversations that keep you young. Try and get out of the house to meet them, this could be in a restaurant for lunch or even a spa for the day. There is no harm in getting pampered while you socialise. If you are getting asked to go out, try to avoid saying no. It can be tempting to stay at home and avoid the crowds but this can not only lead to mental health issues but cognitive decline as well.

We hope you found this article helpful and that it gave you some ideas on how you can avoid your brain turning to mush. Remember, making small changes can make a whole world of difference and is better than doing nothing at all.
