Starting your own online business is a journey that is very exciting! You’ll have many ups and downs – hopefully, more ups – and learn plenty along the way. In fact, every day is a learning curve when you are starting up your own online business. As much as you can prepare, you will never know what is sneaking up on you around the corner.

When starting up your own online business, there are plenty of things you should be considering, before your launch. Of course, a website should be first on your checklist, then social media channels, as well as marketing materials (organising your business card printing as an example) and an accounts package, as well as countless other things.

Our best advice would be to do as much research as possible, not rush the launch and give yourself plenty of time to set up. The more preparation you give yourself, the less stressful launching will be and the more likely you are to succeed. Use experts where you can, companies like WR Partners can help you with setting up your accounts and any tax questions. If you know anyone who runs an online business, reach out to them for advice as they will be able to give you the most accurate feedback to help your company progress.

To help get you started on your exciting adventure, we have put together a checklist for starting up your own online business.

Setting up your social media channels

Another component that you can’t be successful without is social media channels. As an online business, you will most likely be getting a lot of your sales from social media. You can use social media to share product launches, and industry news as well as ask questions that your customers can answer. You don’t need to be signed up to every channel, however, a selection would be advisable – Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, Youtube etc. Utilizing tools like video remove background and break into the job market can give your content a polished, professional look, helping you market with an edge in quality and presentation for your online business.

Setting up your website

You can’t be an online business without having a website. Setting up your own website is a lot easier than it used to be. You can use a drag-and-drop builder to make one yourself, or if your budget allows it, you can hire a freelancer to make one for you. Agencies are great as well, but you will be spending a lot, as they tend to be the more expensive option – however, you pay for what you get.

Accounts package

You will need an accounts package to track all your sales. Along with tracking sales, an accounts package can be used to keep track of your expenses and invoices. Each month you can pull a report from your accounting software to see how your profit and loss is going – hopefully, it’s all profit! There are many accounting software that you can use, so it’s worth doing your research, to find the one that will suit you best. A lot will have a phone number you can call to ask any questions that have. If you have an accountant, they should also be able to assist you with picking an accounts package. A lot will have a preferred supplier which they work with on a regular basis, spreading up their workflow.

Marketing Materials

As an online business, a lot of your marketing will be done online. You should, however, have a few physical pieces of marketing materials that you can use to reach out to people in your local area. As a start-up, having a flyer created will help you as well as having business cards created. A brochure can be used to give to your clients as well as any custom print materials, such as a book. When starting up, working with a graphic designer can be helpful, as they will be able to advise you on the best marketing materials to go for first and the ones that aren’t as useful at the launch stage. They will also be able to help you with your branding and your logo, which is another area of your online business that you should be prioritising.

Insurances

Have you done your research on the different insurances that you will need when going live? Depending on what your offering is, there will be a myriad of insurance products that you should sign up for, in case something bad happens. The standard ones a lot of businesses sign up for include public liability insurance, contents insurance, employee liability insurance and cyber insurance. When getting quotes on insurance, always reach out to a selection of companies to make sure you are getting the best price. A bit like car insurance, there are several sites that work with multiple brokers, helping you find a supplier. Also, take into note the place you are operating from. If you’re relocating to Dubai and launching your business from there, they may have different requirements.

Photography

Every online business will need good photos to sell their offering – especially if you are selling products online. Your phone can do an ok job at first, but it’s always advised that you use a professional photographer to snap a range of high-quality shots. These shots won’t only be used on your website, they can be used on your social media channels as well as your marketing materials. If you are planning on taking your own photos, make sure you buy a reasonable DSLR camera as well as the right equipment, such as lights, a tripod etc. When you take your own photos, you will need to edit them on a laptop and use a program like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.

Advertising budget

When you launch, what is your plan for getting new customers to buy from you? One method to bring new customers in will be through the use of advertising. By setting an advertising budget, you can delegate these funds to Google Ads, Sponsored Posts, and Display Ads as well as working with influencers. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, always try a few methods as not all of them will work for you straight away. Once you have been advertising for a few months, you can then look into what methods are working best, and invest more into that method.

When evaluating where to spend, treat ad networks like any other supplier: compare audience reach, targeting granularity, and pricing models before committing larger budgets. For a practical starting point, consult curated comparisons of the best ad networks for advertisers to understand differences in ad formats, reporting capabilities and minimum spend requirements. Launch small, time-bound tests across search, display and native channels to see which placements drive the lowest cost-per-acquisition for your offer. Use clear KPIs and consistent attribution to scale the channels that demonstrate reliable returns.

Employees

Online businesses often require fewer employees than physical businesses, however, a lot do need employees to help them with the launch. When putting your plan together, make sure you factor in any employees that you may need. As an online business, you may want to employ a marketing expert. A lot of companies will hire someone in finance as well as a sales expert to improve your sales. When advertising for your roles, you can do this on social media, or advertise on a recruitment website, like Indeed. If you are looking for a specific role that can be hard to recruit for, a recruitment agency may be beneficial for you.

We hope our checklist has covered and answered some key questions that you weren’t sure of with your to-be, online business. Along with reading blog posts, YouTube is a great place to look for online videos on starting up a business and speaking to your friends and family members who have their own online businesses will help also.
