Austin – Month 10
What a strange old month. Austin is now 10 months old in a world that is very different from when he was 9 months old. Rightly so, all his baby classes have been cancelled, there are no more swimming lessons and he hasn’t seen anyone apart from my husband and myself for over a month.
We’ve been so lucky with the nice weather, particularly over Easter. We’ve been taking full advantage of the fact we have a garden and have been out there morning to night on the sunnier days.
It was also my first Mother’s Day. It wasn’t the day we had planned. We were going to spend the weekend seeing either side of the family. With us hosting one day. But as we were told to stay away from each other, Rob, Austin and I went for a walk, cooked a nice lunch and spent the day playing together. We had a really nice moment when at bedtime, Austin cuddled up on me and fell asleep. He’s really not a cuddly baby, so it was a heart-melting moment and so lovely that it was on my first Mother’s Day.
Sleeping
He’s been consistently sleeping well overnight. Going down at 7pm and sleeping until about 6 to 6:15ish. We’ve pretty much completely dropped the afternoon nap and instead are trying out moving his lunchtime nap a bit later as he seems to sleep a bit longer if we do and also he’s less ratty around the latter part of the day.
Morning nap – 9.15 – 9:45/10:15am
Lunchtime nap – 1:30pm – 2:30/3:00pm
Feeding
He’s really enjoying his food and we’ve increased his portion size at breakfast as we found he was getting ratty because he was hungry. This does seem to be working. He now has either 30g Ready Brek with 5 oz of milk or 2 Weetabix with 5 oz of milk for breakfast and some fruit (usually half a banana).
Lunch is normally something like a casserole, chilli, tuna pasta or curry followed by fruit or a yoghurt.
Dinner is often more finger food. Egg and toast, quiche and broccoli, croquettes followed by fruit or a yoghurt.
He usually has a snack after his lunchtime nap. Something like some fruit, a rice cake or a wafer.
Nappies
I’m starting to find that we’ve had a few leaks with the Aldi nappies. I think because Austin has started to drink more water, we have to change them more often. I’m finding the Pampers nappies more absorbent, so I think we’ll switch to these for both daytime and overnight. Austin is still in size 4.
Mental and Physical Development
He’s sitting up well and he’s now able to transition from sitting to on his tummy. He’s not yet crawling but he is up on all fours, so I don’t think it’ll be long now before he does attempt it.
He can move around quite well despite this. He shuffles around on his tummy and as you know he’s quite good at rolling around. I am having to find that I now need to move items which are at lower levels as he can move around quite quickly.
He’s also getting much stronger in the legs, he’s started to attempt to climb things too. If he’s sitting next to you, he’ll often try and climb up you. He can also stand holding himself on furniture, but thankfully he hasn’t got the strength to pull himself up yet.
He’s quite good at recognising toys and if you say a toy’s name, he’ll sometimes find that toy. He also copies what you do. For example, if pick up two blocks and bang them together, he’ll look for two blocks and do the same.
He’s really into musical toys. They are always the ones he seems to make a beeline for and also the ones that keep his attention the longest. He likes his little drum and a set of handbells, he’s got a toy piano too which he loves to fiddle with it. My husband also brought some bongos down from his collection of instruments and he straight away was playing them, so they’ve been added to Austin’s collection.
He’s got some toy pots and pans and he loves making a racket with them as if they are cymbals. He’s quite fascinated by noises. I’ve noticed him stopping and listening if I’m stirring my teacup or mixing stock in a jug. He obviously likes listening to different sounds.
His speech is coming along really well and he’s added new words to his repertoire. He knows bucket (he has a bucket as part of his shape sorter), umbrella and he has also said in perfect context ‘oh dear’ as he’s throwing toys on the floor.
Teeth-wise, we now have 6 teeth cut. Two at the bottom and four at the top. The four at the top pretty much all cut through within about a week of each other. It luckily didn’t seem to bother him.
