Our baby girl is now 10 months old. She’s really getting the hang of new skills and developing her little personality. She’s a lot of fun to be around, she enjoys playing and spending time together. I’ve put together an update on everything she’s been up to in the last month.
Autumn – Month 10
Sleeping
Getting rid of her dummy has been a huge success. She now sleeps a full 12 hours overnight (at least) without any fuss. I’m so relieved as I was having to go back in every 45 minutes or so during the night to put her dummy back in. Now she’s no trouble at all and she goes down to bed at about 6:30ish and generally sleeps until about 6:30 – 7 am ish without waking. She’s quite a heavy sleeper. She doesn’t move much during the night.
Naps have become a bit of an issue though. She cries when she goes down for a nap and then cries when she wakes from a nap. I don’t think she’s very good at transitioning from one sleep cycle to another during the day, so she’s waking up from the first cycle tired and can’t get herself off to sleep again. She goes straight into crying. I’ve started timing our trips out around the morning nap time as she drifts off in the car quite easily and there is no crying. I’ll have to try some different ideas with her lunchtime nap as it would be good if she had a nice long sleep after lunch as she often wakes up a bit tired and ratty.
At the moment she is napping for 45 minutes or so at around 9:15 am and then again for another 45 minutes at 1 pm.
Feeding
We’ve had a real leap forward in terms of feeding. It started just as Autumn turned 10 months. She suddenly started to show a lot more interest in trying to put food in her mouth. She’s still very independent and wants to do it herself, but she’s very open to trying new things. She seems to like things with a bit more flavour like curry, chilli and even jambalaya! That’s great for us as we are used to cooking with garlic, herbs and spices for the rest of us, so we are just mindful of salt levels and she eats very similarly to what we have now. She still loves her yoghurt and pureed fruit and she will happily eat these off a spoon.
Since she is now eating a bit more solid food, we’ve cut her milk down by an ounce per feed, so she is now offered 9oz four times a day. If she’s had a decent meal, she often will only drink 6 – 7 oz, if she’s not been that interested in her food she will finish the bottle. I generally give her solids around an hour before her milk feed.
Mental and Physical Development
Speech-wise we’ve had a few more words. She can say ball, banana, Mummy, Dada, woof, and mango quite clearly. She makes a grunty throaty noise when she wants to get your attention or she wants something. For example, if she’s eating and she wants a drink, she’ll make this grunty noise until you pass her a drink.
She’s much more confident sitting up now and can shuffle very slowly around on her bottom. She’s quite happy on her front for some tummy time but she’s not coordinated enough yet to be on the move.
She still loves musical toys, particularly shakers, drums and pianos. She also loves playing ball. She’s good really good hand control and can roll and throw a ball for a game of catch.
She really enjoys listening to music and if it’s something she likes the sound of she bobs along to it. If she’s a bit grumpy putting music on will also calm her.
We’ve had a couple of trips to the park and soft play. She enjoys going down the slides and going on the swings. She is still quite small, even for the baby swings so she does bob about in there a bit, so I have to push her gently, but she enjoys the motion.
In addition to the two teeth she cut last month, she’s also got 4 up top now and another 2 coming along. She wasn’t anywhere near as dribbly as when she cut the first two, she has been a bit grumpy with the top four, but not as bad as when she cut the first two.
I also had her weighed and she’s 18lb1oz. She’s mainly wearing 9 – 12 month clothes with the exception of sleepsuits and trousers where she is in some 12 – 18 month sizes.
