How To Create Your Own Personal Zen Garden Space
This is a collaborative post
If you have an unused space in your back garden, turn it into a zen garden. Having a place to reflect and meditate can help you unwind throughout your busy week. Here is how to create your own personal zen garden space.
Set Up The Zen Garden
How you set up the zen garden is subjective to your desire. The basic way to create a zen garden is by following these steps.
First, lay the foundation with gravel or dark sand. If too much sunlight gets on your garden and causes glare, these foundation types will eliminate the likelihood of the glare occurring. Plus, the gravel will not be as affected if it rains or other inclement weather occurs.
Then, install stepping stones to set the walkway. Choose a natural stone and gently curve the walkway so anyone walking through can control their movements gracefully while enjoying all the views. Place the stones close together so each step is careful and focused rather than fast-paced.
Place Beautiful Zen Garden Plants
The best way to enhance zen gardens is to place evergreen varieties that will stay in bloom year-round. Consider the Japanese black pine, coastal redwood, cedar, and Japanese yew as your evergreen display. Japanese maple varieties such as the Red Dragon or Crimson Queen are the most popular for zen gardens and plant nurseries.
Seasonal plants will add a pop of colour and beauty to your zen garden. Azaleas and rhododendrons last primarily throughout the spring to give your zen garden an updated appearance.
Azaleas bloom between the end of March to the middle of May and come in warm colours such as whites, reds, purples, and a mix of two colours. Rhododendrons come in blues, pinks (such as magenta), purples, yellows, and other colours. They are in season from the end of March to late June.
Designate A Place To Sit And Reflect
Find a wooden garden bench to add to your zen garden. It will give an all-natural look to match the green foliage in the garden.
A zen garden’s purpose is to encourage relaxation, calmness, and meditation. Designating at least one place in your zen garden to sit and reflect will give yourself and your guests time to meditate, calm down from stressors, and look hopefully towards the future.
Place A Garden Table To Lighten The Load
Of course, people may have possessions with them as they are on their zen garden walk, whether a backpack or a lunch box. Having lunch in a zen garden after your meditative walk would be very relaxing!
Add a garden table in front of your bench for people to set their possessions down and relax on the bench for a moment. Taking the weight off your back and out of your pockets will leave you feeling light and ready to meditate more in-depth.
Put On The Finishing Touches

Now it’s time for the finishing touches. Make your zen garden extra special with fine details and delightful sounds.
Rake swirly patterns into the gravel ground to create a relaxing and whimsical effect. Line stone pebbles around any water fountains that you may have in the zen garden.
Install rock areas for a pop of neutrally natural colour. You can mix tan and grey colour tones strategically spread out throughout the stone path. These rock areas will complement the stepping stone rocks on the pathway.
Setting up a zen garden is as careful of a process as walking and meditating through one. Find the right balance of evergreen plants, natural stones, and water landscapes to make your zen garden a dream come true.
