If you are finding it difficult to manage stress and grief, then you will know how hard it can be to sometimes navigate challenges that come with it as well. If you want to help yourself here, then one thing you need to do is try and acknowledge and accept your emotions. It’s very natural for you to feel overwhelmed, anxious, sad, or even numb when dealing with either loss or stress, but if you try to suppress these feelings by pretending to be okay when you’re not, then this will greatly increase your emotional burden.

This is a collaborative post.

Allow yourself to Grieve

Another thing you need to do is try and allow yourself to grieve without any judgment. If you feel as though you need to cry, then it’s important that you do so. If you feel as though you need to express your frustration or even sit quietly with your feelings, then that is perfectly fine as well. Accepting that your emotions are valid will help you to process things more efficiently, and it will also reduce the internal conflict you are experiencing. Another thing you can do is try and put self-care first. When stress and grief hit you simultaneously, it’s very easy for you to neglect things like self-care. With that said, if you can take the time to stabilize your emotional state, then this will help you a lot. Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do here, as is eating good food.

Engage in Exercise

Although you may not feel like it, exercise is one of the best things you can do. Walking, yoga, or anything else can help you to release tension, and it can also help you to boost endorphins. If possible, you need to avoid consuming too much alcohol, and you also need to avoid processed foods. If you don’t, then you may find that this leads to even more sadness and anxiety. Small acts of self-care are incredibly important here, especially if you are grieving someone.

Seek Help

Another thing you need to do is try and seek help if you can. It may be that you need to contact someone so you can unload the burden you are under, or even by trying to find out if any local funeral directors in your area can help you with the arrangements. Things like this can help you more than you realise, and they can also help you to get a strong sense of normalcy back as well. This is especially the case if you are going through a tough time. During a period of grief, you may also find that your mental state is not what it could be. You may not be able to perform at your usual level, and you may also not be able to maintain the same social commitments. Handling daily tasks might also seem like a bit of a challenge, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you can take the time to set realistic expectations for yourself, and if you can then communicate them back to others, this will help a lot.

Create a Support System

Another thing you need to do is create a good support system. Isolation often worsens after periods of stress and grief. If you want to help yourself, then you need to try and reach out to family members and even close friends. Another thing you need to do is talk about your feelings, as well as your experiences. This will help you to process everything, and it will also help to stop any emotional tension from building.

Don’t be afraid to ask someone if they can give you some more practical help as well. It may be that you ask someone if they can help you pick up some groceries, or that you ask them for some help with childcare. Feeling supported will help to reduce the sense of grief you are under, and it will also help with things like loneliness, which will create a buffer against the more negative effects that stress can give you.

Practice MIndfulness

Another positive thing to do would be for you to be able to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is one of the best ways for you to stay grounded, and it also helps you to be more present. This helps to reduce the chaos that is often caused by stress and grief. Techniques, which may include deep breathing and meditation, are ideal if you want to calm your nervous system, and they can also help you to feel much more in control. Try and set aside 5 or 10 minutes every day so you can make sure that you are not feeling too overwhelmed. Practice being present, and make sure that you don’t consume yourself with grief if you can.

Express your Feelings

You also need to try and make sure that you are taking the time to express your feelings. Creative outlets can include painting, music, photography, and more. You may also find that this is a powerful way for you to make sense of what it is you are experiencing. Art and music can serve as very good ways for you to channel your grief, and on top of this, they can help you to turn stress into something more tangible. Engaging in more creative experiences and activities helps you to give your mind a break from overthinking, and it will also help your emotional healing.

Another good thing to do would be for you to try and establish a daily routine. When stress and grief disrupt your life, you may find that having a routine helps you with stability, which can help you more than you realise. Even creating consistency by waking up at the same time every day and having a more consistent meal schedule can help, as can including time to relax and reflect on things. A predictable routine can help you to stop feelings of chaos while restoring a sense of order.
