One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, they say. And you can find plenty of both at a flea market. You may find a one of a kind artwork for your home or you may just find rubbish that you would never want in your home.
When you are looking to decorate your house a flea market is one of the best places you can go to find some real diamonds in the rough. From end tables, and nightstands to knick knacks to decorate your shelves, there are always interesting antique items for just about every taste.
But, it isn’t always easy to find these things and it is easy to overspend while there. If you plan to hit the flea markets anytime soon then you need these tips to get the most out of the experience.
Here are some things to keep in mind when you are doing some shopping at your local flea market.
Get There Early And Stay Late
If you are allowed in even before opening time, then get there as early as you are allowed. Not only will you be the first to spot a bargain and snatch it up, but you may even get a better price. As the vendors are unpacking, they are sometimes willing to let things go for a song so they don’t have to bother putting it on display.
Then, at the end of the day, there are things that the vendor is willing to let go for cheap to not have to load back up in the truck. If they have items that are not moving week after week, then they will practically give it away just to not have to deal with it any longer.
Be Ready To Haggle
The price is never really the price at a flea market so be ready to haggle. It is an art form, however so make sure you understand how to play the game. Nobody is willing to be taken advantage of so there is a line that if you cross will guarantee that you don’t end up with the item.
The first rule is to be nice. Nobody is going to deal with somebody that’s pushy. Being pushy or rude is a sure way to pay the asking price if you really want the item.
The general rule of thumb is to offer slightly over half of what they are asking and then meet someplace in the middle. If it is listed for £100, offer £55 and settle on £70.
Be Prepared
If you are looking for furniture, then knowing what the dimensions are will help avoid any uncertainty. Bring along a tape measure so you can size it up.
Also, bring swatches of colors so you know if it is going to match your decor. Remember that shopping at a flea market is not like a store. There are no returns if you find it is the wrong item or too big.
