If you’re like many people who tend to be conscientious with their items, then you might find yourself holding onto more items than you really should. As time goes on, these unused yet undiscarded items can really start to take up more space and time than they should. If you have a garage or some other home storage space, the problem can get worse. Whether you’re trying to turn the tide back on a potential hoarding issue, or you just want to maximize space in a small room, here are a few tips to help you declutter with the best of them.

This is a collaborative post.

Sort things into different categories

When you start decluttering, you need to make sure that you are considering absolutely everything. There is no item that is not up for question. You should create a “yes,” “no,” and “maybe” pile. The yeses are the things that immediately and obviously have a place in your home. As you list things, you should keep in mind the utility they play in the home. If another object has the exact same kind of utility, and you don’t need two of them, make a decision on which one to get rid of. Things that you might want to sell, pass on, or use to decorate when you have more space should go in the “maybe” pile.

Have a place to put what isn’t in use

If you have a lot of clutter to get rid of, then you should start by making sure that you have a place for the items that you do or might want to keep. Sometimes, it can be hard to see the true worth of your individual items beyond the sheer volume of things in the way, and renting some self storage can help you find a place for both the items that you definitely want to keep, but temporarily want out of the way, or the things that you maybe want. You can use a local same day courier service to help you transport your belongings in and out of storage. It can give you space to decide what you want to do with some items without having to keep them in your own space.

Finding the right way to let go

For the items in your “no” pile, it might be fairly easy to get rid of them once you make the effort to. However, for things that are a little harder to release, you should make sure that you find a way to get the best value out of them. Take the time to find out local charities you can donate items, as well as places that might buy things like technology or usable furniture that you’re not getting any value out of. If you have a lot of items that have some sentimental value, then create a single box of memories that you can keep, neat and compact, somewhere in the home, allowing you to let go of the rest with less guilt.

Your decluttering project isn’t something that you should put off for too long. It can make a home not just a lot more unpleasant to be in, but it can be a real fire hazard. Start with your major clean-up as soon as you can with the tips above.
