Read with Your Child
We all know how incredibly beneficial reading can be. It keeps the brain active and introduces children to new words. They can learn their spellings and learn about how they are used. To broaden your child’s vocabulary, make time to read together at home. A nice way to incorporate reading into their routine is through story time just before bed, when their devices are out of sight and tucked away.
Diversify Your Vocabulary
In addition to reading, you can expand their vocabulary verbally through the conversations that you have. Diversifying the words that you use will introduce new vocabulary to your child and help them improve their language skills.
English Spellings
Their spellings are also an opportunity for them to grow their vocabulary. Children are set a list of spellings to learn each week as a part of their English homework. You can help them to revise these and explore how they are used.
Word of The Day
A great tool to download is “Word of The Day”. It shares a new word and its definition every day. After a year of making use of the app, your child will have learned 365 new words.
What’s also important is practice. Encourage your child to use the words they’ve learned on a more frequent basis so that they aren’t forgotten and can become a part of their dictionary.
