I have a four-year-old son, so I understand how hard it can be for little ones. They have a lot of big emotions and they have to navigate their way around how they feel and how to put this in words. If you add in the fact that four and five-year-olds are also starting school, so they have a new environment and lots of new faces, it is no wonder sometimes they feel a bit overwhelmed.
So when I got a chance to try out a book designed to help children with managing their well-being, I jumped at the opportunity.

‘How I Feel’ is a brand new activity book aimed at children aged 3 – 7 and is perfect for my son. It’s written by children’s wellbeing expert Becky Goddard-Hill and contains 40 fun and inspiring activities to help younger children express their feelings and emotions.
After spending some time browsing the book on my own, I love the way it is laid out in different sections. If you feel your child is struggling with talking about their feelings, you can go straight to this section. If you want your little one to feel calmer, there are activities set out, which are perfect for this. There are also sections for helping kids feel happier, kinder and braver. All essential areas for most people’s kids.

The book is beautifully illustrated and my son really enjoyed looking at the pictures as we did some of the activities together. The colour palette of the book is calm and inviting and so it’s a book that your little one will enjoy reading, whilst doing the activities together.
My son is pretty chilled and quite emotionally balanced, but when he comes out of school, he is quite often a closed book about his day and what’s happened during it. I think well-timed activities like this can help unlock his emotions, so he can better understand what he’s feeling and how to talk about it. They are much more fun and engaging than just talking at the end of the day on the way home from school when he’s clearly tired and just wants to unwind. There are also lots of tools he can use to help express himself. It really is a very clever and lovely book.
How I Feel Activities
The other night, we used the ‘Speak Up’ activity and chatted about the different scenarios. It was really insightful to see how he would deal with the different scenarios and I was impressed with the discussion that came out of it. It led us to him sharing other emotions that he’d been feeling during the day and we chatted them through. I think the biggest part of the magic of the book is actually finding time to do the activities together. As parents, we are all somewhat guilty of being very busy and if our kids seem happy, that’s great. But sometimes underneath all that, they might be feeling something that they don’t know how to share and a book like this can help us show them that their well-being is the most important thing to us.
No matter how little their worries seem to us, they are big and important to them, so anything that lets them know there is always someone to talk to is a great thing.
