Holidays are much-needed breaks in today’s modern, fast-paced life. Holidays are a time for relaxation, creating lasting memories, and exploration. It is also a time to click lots of pictures and shoot videos so that every second of your holiday is accounted for and you can share them with your friends or family. Unfortunately, your trusted sidekick in this matter, your iPhone, comes with limited storage. Storage space may quickly run out with the abundance of videos, photos, and apps you download during your travels.
For a stress-free holiday experience, it is paramount to take steps to avoid running out of space on your iPhone. Follow these simple tips to have an enjoyable holiday.

Before you go on a holiday
- Check storage – Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to assess what is taking up space on your iPhone. You will see a bar chart divided up into Photos, Messages, Apps, System Data, and Other. This will give you a clear idea of what you need to delete to reclaim space.
- Delete unnecessary apps – If apps are taking up too much space, go through the applications installed on your phone and delete the ones you no longer use. This can free up significant storage space.
- Delete photos and videos – On your upcoming holiday, you are going to create new memories. You need space to fit those memories. Hence, go through your photos and videos and remove the ones that are not needed. Remove duplicate photos and videos, blurry ones, and so on. If deleting is not an option, you can first upload them to iCloud Photo Library and then delete them from your iPhone’s internal storage. You could also transfer the photos and videos to your Mac or an external storage device.
- Free up Other storage – Other storage is where all the logs, caches, and other resources used by the phone are stored. After iOS 15, the name was changed to System Data. It is essential to know how to delete Other in iPhone storage to reclaim valuable space. When eliminating files in this storage category, remember not to delete the system files because they are used by iOS. You can remove the temporary files, logs and website caches, and caches of streaming media.
If you need additional storage space, consider subscribing to a cloud storage service like OneDrive and Google Drive or expanding the storage space of your iCloud Photo. Uploading photos and videos to cloud storage will allow you to access them on your iPhone as needed.
While you are travelling
- Optimize photos and videos – After a fruitful day of clicking photos and shooting videos, take some time to review them. Delete the ones that are blurry or don’t capture your best side. You can also use editing tools like in the Photos app to trim videos and reduce their file size.
- Offload unused apps – If you need to quickly free up space during your travels without losing data, you can consider offloading applications instead of deleting them. Offloading apps will remove them from your device but preserve the data. You can reinstall the app later without losing progress.
- Limit yourself from downloading apps – While travelling, be mindful of the apps you download. It is best to download all the apps you need for your travel before you go on holiday. This will provide you with a realistic picture of how much storage space is left.
If doing all of this is not enough and you need more storage space, you can consider supplementing your iPhone’s capacity with external storage accessories. You can even use iCloud storage to extend the capacity to 2TB.
When you return home
- Back up your data – Once you are home, back up your data to ensure your travel photos and videos are safe. You can even transfer them to an external device or your Mac to clear the iPhone’s internal storage.
- Delete the unused apps and media files – Now that you have to get back to your regular life and will need your phone for work, create space by deleting all the travel apps you won’t need anymore. You can also delete all the photos and videos that you have already backed up so your iPhone doesn’t face performance issues due to lack of storage space.
All set for your holiday?

Keeping in mind the tips given above, you will never have to worry about running out of space on your iPhone during your holiday. Be mindful of the applications you download during your travels, and remember to optimize your videos and photos so there’s enough storage space for clicking more. If you have access to Wi-Fi, you can also transfer pictures and videos to iCloud and free up the internal storage on your phone.
