Navigating the inevitable obstacles that life throws our way can be a bit of a daunting task. Finding time on top of all that to plan a holiday can sometimes feel like a bit too much to handle, but no matter how tired and cash-strapped you’re feeling, it’s worth trying to get away for a few days every now and then.

Planning your trip doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task, and there are a number of ways that you can make it more affordable and accessible all around.

This is a collaborative post

Establish your budget

Before you start dreaming about wild travel plans, have a sit-down and think about your budget. Try to do this a while before you actually plan to start travelling, so that you still have time to save up for the trip. Travelling can end up being expensive, but it doesn’t have to break the bank if you take a strategic approach. The main things to think about are how much you’ve got, whether you’re prepared to put any of the trip on credit, and how much you reckon you can save before you have to go away.

Start exploring different options

Once you’ve managed to establish your budget, you can start looking at potential destinations. Try to factor in all the different costs involved, including flights, accommodation, transfer costs to and from the airport or train station, and money for food and activities.

If possible, choose a destination and duration that doesn’t push your budget to the max. If you’re trying to relax, you don’t really want to feel like you’re watching every single penny you spend, or that it’s going to leave you stretched for cash when you get home.

Decide on priorities

If you really want to travel this year but you’re not sure if you can afford it, try to think about what else you’re prioritising over travel without realising it. For example, could you save some money by not going to the pub for a month and having friends round to your place instead? Do you go to a lot of concerts and cultural events that you could cut back on for a few weeks? You’ll often find that there are other areas where you can make significant savings, potentially freeing up the room for you to travel somewhere instead.

Commit to a trip

If you’re struggling to find a way to commit to a trip, but you think it’s definitely something you want to do, then find a way to tie yourself in. Make a concrete plan with a friend, buy a non-refundable flight, or book the time off of work – anything that will force future you to take the well-deserved break that current you feels is well deserved.

Making travel a reality can feel like a big task to undertake, but it needn’t be overwhelming. By using the tactics we’ve described above, it should be more than manageable for most people to achieve.
