Maximise Storage Space In A Smaller Home
This is a collaborative post
Do you have a smaller hom which you need to maximise the storage space? Smaller homes have some advantages over large houses. It takes less time to clean them, the rent or mortgage is lower, it can even feel more homely and cosy. If you decide to move out, you will probably have fewer things to move, since it’s easy to accumulate too many items in a larger home without even noticing it. You could start with a smaller space and use someone like Live in Lofts to add extra space.
Decluttering
While less space can potentially mean less clutter, it usually doesn’t. Aside from decluttering, usually what we are really looking for is more storage space!
So, how can you maximise storage when space is tight? And what are the benefits of decluttering?
Decluttering can free you of anxiety
Having a tidy and clutter-free home is not only good aesthetically but beneficial for your mental health too. Decluttering is a very positive thing and can really make you feel better instantly. This is one of the reasons why Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has become so popular. Around 11 million people have bought the book and over 650.000 people have subscribed to her YouTube channel. Marie, who has developed the KonMari method, sees tidying as life-changing and as a way to transform your life.
Organising your home can help you relax and feel less anxious at home. It can be a great way to manage your stress levels since too much clutter will give your mind too much to process. A minimalist or clutter-free lifestyle can make your home a great place to unwind and relax in. You will also spend less money since you will not buy as many items for your home, which can be very freeing.
Ways To Improve Storage
Sometimes, decluttering is just not enough – or you just don’t want to part with some of your favourite things! In this case, the solution is more storage!
• Use the wasted space around doors
Small picture ledges are perfect for decorating the area behind your door, but you could also hang up your keys here. If you love to read magazines, build slim shelves and display them here. Other things to store here are hats, coats, bags, scarves, jewellery or you could add a mirror.

• Gain some space under the windows
Did you ever stop to think about all the ways that windowsills can be transformed? Some people add shelves to the wall underneath or around them, others extend their surface by adding drawer shelves directly below the existing windowsill. There are even ways to add a folding desk or table directly to a windowsill by attaching it with hinges. You can then fold it down whenever you don’t need it.
• Invest in fitted storage in living rooms or bedrooms
Fitted storage and fitted wardrobes blend in seamlessly with the walls of a room. They can look very elegant and create less clutter since they become a part of the room. Fitted wardrobes also often give you more space to organise all of your clothes, making this a great option for smaller homes.
• Use multi-functional furniture
Smaller flats and houses have inspired some very innovative furniture – a lounge chair with bookshelves on the sides, a sofa with a folding table attached to the back, dining chairs that fit seamlessly underneath the table, creating more space. You can find plenty of ideas and inspiration online.
• Utilise the back of doors
Doors can be transformed into shelves without much effort. Simply add some floating shelves to the back of a door and store items such as beauty supplies, books, pictures and more. Some shops offer readymade storage shelves that can be hung over doors such as jewellery organisers with full-length mirrors.
• Use the walls in the hallway
Hallways can be narrow and tend to be rather bare. Sometimes there is just not enough space to add storage solutions. Instead of adding anything to the shelves, consider installing drawers and shelves below the ceiling, creating shelves that can be reached with a ladder.
If you are looking to add storage solutions or find ways to declutter, you will find plenty of great options online.
