If you are thinking about getting a pet portrait or gifting one to a loved one, I thought it would be useful to put together a couple of tips to ensure that you can offer the best photo to create pet portraits.
Photography Tips
Shoot photos of your pet when they are at their best – well-rested, fed and generally happy. This will produce the best results.
If you are taking images using a ‘proper’ camera, like a DSLR use a high aperture and shoot a few images with different settings. That way you can ensure you get the clearest photo possible. You can look through the images you have taken on your computer afterwards and select the best one for your portrait.
If you are taking the photos on your smartphone, avoid portrait mode and make sure your final photo is in focus. You can look at the images during the shoot, but you are best to examine them closely on a larger screen before deciding on your final shot. If you are going to be using the image for a large canvas, you’ll want to be sure every detail is as perfect as it can be.
It’s best to position your pet on a plain, colour-contrasted background without any props or anyone holding your pet.
Take the photo in the highest quality setting possible. If you aren’t sure how you do this, consult your camera’s manual or look up how to best use your specific phone for photography purposes.
