How To Upcycle Garden Furniture
The time for sitting out in the garden is rapidly coming to an end. As the nights draw in and the weather gets colder, I’ll look upon this as the summer that came early, lasted a month and then disappeared into grey cloud for the rest of its time. It’s England, so I’m not sure I’m surprised, but it would have been nice to have a few more days of sunshine to enjoy my upcycled garden furniture.
As autumn is well and truly settled in, we’ve put away our beautiful upcycled garden furniture. But I thought I would share the before and after photos, hopefully to inspire you to tackle something like this for next summer.
I love an upcycle project or as my husband will tell you, I love an upcycle project, where I can get everyone involved. I’m no lone ranger when it comes to DIY. I like to get help and company from wherever I can. Normally it’s in the form of my Dad or my husband. But it’s not limited, it can be from anyone in my immediate circle of family and friends.
Last summer I bought a second hand wooden garden table and chairs, and my Dad and I have spent some months sanding them down and repainting them – basically refurbishing garden furniture. I had a vision that I wanted a really brightly coloured garden furniture set and of course you can’t buy what I had in mind. Enter upcycling project.
I love an ebay bargain, so when I saw the set online, I knew I had to win. Much to my husband’s dismay, we won the set and trundled off to Surrey to pick them up. Handily, my husband has an estate car. I’m pretty sure he wishes he didn’t at times.
As far as upcycling garden furniture projects go, this was one pretty straight forward. Sand down the table and chairs and repaint them. I used Cuprinol garden shades paint in four different colours. The table and 2 chairs in blue and the remaining chairs in pairs, in pink, purple and green. I think the overall effect looks pretty stunning, particularly the upcycled garden table.
Even better, unbeknown to me, my parents had come around and borrowed the left over paint to paint me a matching plant ladder which they later gave me as a gift. So our garden now looks even more spectacular with the matching table top, chairs and plant ladder. Woo hoo to upcycled outdoor furniture projects. Keep posted on what else I have in the pipeline.
What do you think? Does this give you some tips and inspiration on how to upcycle garden furniture?

If you aren’t feeling quite as handy with the sanding and painting, you could go down the route of purchasing some garden furniture.

Oh that looks so pretty with all the different coloured chairs, Sally! I had a table exactly like this one which I varnished up once but didn’t think to paint it. That Cuprinol paint is good though isn’t it? I painted my vegetable beds in a lavender colour and they look great. Sophie x
Hi Sophie! Thanks very much. I bet your vegetable beds look great. I love the lavender colour.
I love how colorful this set is! I love all things colorful. I have a few small terra cotta pots that are in different colors to display some of my succulents in. This looks like a fun project with a beautiful result. Thank you for sharing on the #MyGloriousGardens July link party!
They sound wonderful Ann. I plan on painting some of my pots to match.
Loving the bright colours that have gone into upcycling the garden furniture.
Thanks Helena. We really like a bit of colour.
I love this! Your set reminds me of beach hut colours. So pretty. Who would have thought of doing this to an old furniture set. You have certainly made it sparkle. Thank you for joining us for the #dreamteam xx
Thanks Annette. The beach hut look was what I was going for! I’m glad it came across.
This looks brilliant. I wish I had the time and patience to do something like this
Thanks for linking up to #AnythingGoes 🙂

Thank you! What happened to your garden?
I’m back with #BloggerClubUK
This looks so beautiful, what a great idea to make use of different colours. #dreamteam
Thank you. I really liked the idea that people might pick a favourite colour to sit on, and there might be a discussion around it!
I really need to get crafty because outdoor furniture is expensive!!! #AnythingGoes
I know exactly what you mean Heather. You can easily pay over a grand for a six or eight seater. It’s well worth buying a decent second hand set and doing it up. I’m so lucky my Dad is handy with these things to help me (and he’s retired, that helps!!)
