Your Guide To Bath Time and Baby Bath Products

Bathing your newborn baby for the very first time is a big deal and going forward bath time can either be a lot of fun or a stressful time for parent and baby. I’ve put together a handy guide to help you breeze through baby bath time, making it enjoyable for everyone involved.

Don’t Spring a Surprise

We find the biggest bath time tantrums come from when Austin is right in the middle of playing and we announce it’s his bath time. We’ve now learnt that telling Austin that a bath is being run and he’s got five more minutes to play is ideal. He knows what to expect next and generally, he’s more agreeable.

We also find that this works once he is in the bath. We tell him when he’s got 5 more minutes to play with his bath toys, he’s much more agreeable to coming out and will even rather cutely say goodbye to duckies.

Get Prepared

Bath time is always easier if one of us runs the bath and gets the toys and towels ready, whilst the other one attends to Austin. I know that’s not always practical, but getting prepared in advance of bath time can help it run a bit more smoothly. You’ll also find you have everything at your fingertips and won’t need to shout for someone to bring you a towel or the flannel.

Buy Baby Bath Products

As a baby’s skin is a lot more sensitive than adult skin, when you are first bathing baby, you may choose not to use any products to wash them with. As your little one gets older, you should suits products which are suitable for their age. You could have a look at the range from Good Bubble, which is a nice, gentle natural range, designed for little ones. A squeeze of bubble bath can produce lots of fun bubbles for little ones to play with, tear-free baby shampoo is ideal for hair washing and then after bath time, a baby moisturiser can be massaged into little one’s skin.

Make It Fun

Kids learn through play, so why would bath time be any different. A few bath toys will really help bath time along and will make it more fun for you both. Scoops, squirters, cups and nets are great fun. As are ducks, boats and anything else your little one like to float amongst the bubbles. I find a stick-on bath caddy is ideal for scooping up all the toys at the end.

Safety First

The first rule of bathing a baby or toddler is that you never leave them unattended in the bath. No matter how quick you think you’ll be, that could be long enough for them to get themselves into trouble. So get everything you need prepared in advance and ignore the door if anyone knocks.

You could also consider using a slip-proof bathmat to help prevent baby sliding around.

Another great piece of advice to keep everyone safe is to run the cold into the bath first. If you have a mixer tap, that’s not an issue, but if you have two taps, it’s safer to run the cold water first.
