Getting Your Spare Room Ready For Christmas Visitors

I’m very excited about the upcoming Christmas festivities. I think last year’s washout has allowed everyone to feel that little bit more excited about seeing friends and family again. If you are planning on hosting people this year, it might well be that they will be staying in your spare room, so I’ve put together some tips on how you can get your spare room ready for your Christmas visitors.
Air The Room
If your spare room is anything like ours, then it has been used as a dumping ground or even a place to shove all the clean or drying washing for the last few months. Take some time to open the windows each day and give the room a good blast of fresh air. It will help ventilate the room and circulate some nice fresh air into the space.
Deep Clean
Take all the furniture out (where you can) and give the room a good dust and hoover. You’ll be surprised at how much dust can accumulate in a room that isn’t used very much. Go from top to bottom and then you won’t be doubling back on yourself. Don’t forget the picture frame and the skirting boards – they too could do with a dust.
Declutter
If you have been using the spare room as a bit of a storage area, now might be the time to ask yourself if you actually need or use the items you’ve been storing there. If the answer is yes, then you should find more permanent homes for these items so they are readily accessible when you need them. Remember, self-storage is always a good option if you need extra storage space.
Spruce It Up
Does your spare room need a refresh? Perhaps your guest bed has seen better days? You could think about investing in one of these new divan beds. They are ideal if you need extra storage. If your guest room is a bit cosy, you could look into a small double bed for the space. Another alternative is a zip link bed which allows you to offer two single beds or a double depending on who is staying with you. That way you can still offer your guests a place to sleep, but it doesn’t dominate the room. Perhaps it’s just the walls or the furniture that needs a lick of paint. A bit of attention to detail here and there will have your spare bedroom looking like a plush guest suite in no time.
Tackle The Bedding
If you are looking at sprucing your spare room up. You might want to think about buying some new bedding for your guest room. If you are entertaining over the Christmas period, it might even be fun to offer your guests a room with Christmas bedding in it. Even if you aren’t going to splash out on new bedding, I’d suggest changing the sheets and covers on the guest bed before your visitors arrive as sheets and duvet covers can get ready dusty when they are left for long periods of time – and no one likes sleeping in a dusty bed!
Check The Radiators
If your spare room has gone unused for a while, it might be that the radiators are switched down low, off or perhaps they aren’t even working properly. It’s a good idea to check your radiators before you have guests. If they are only getting warm at the bottom, it might be that you have some air in your system, so you can easily rectify this, by carefully letting some of the air out of the radiator, usually using a screwdriver or Allen key. There are plenty of YouTube videos to show you how to do this if you aren’t sure what you are doing. If your radiator isn’t heating up at all, it might be best to call in a professional to help you with your heating. Maintaining a low heat in unused rooms will also be better for your home in general. It stops rooms from becoming damp and musty.
Check Lights, Curtains and Blinds
If your spare room is little used, it might be that a bulb has gone or the blinds have got a little tough to pull down. Give everything in the room a little test before your visitors arrive and then you won’t be left trying to fix niggly things once they are there. Bulbs in lamps and light shades are easy to replace and blinds might just need a little lubricant. It’s always worth a little check before hosting people.
