The Top Things That Help to Make a House Feel More Like a Home
This is a collaborative post
There are several things that can make a house feel like a home. No matter your situation, whether you live alone, with flatmates, or with family, and whether you rent or buy, there are certain things that you can do that will make your house feel like home. For some people it can be having shoes by the door, for others, it will be having an immaculate space, and others will want to see photos on walls and children’s artwork on the fridge.
In a study, it was found that over half of people consider their bedroom as the ultimate place that transforms a home. Being able to be in your own bed, making the room your own, and making it a comfortable space is one of the things that most of us can agree on to create that complete space and ultimately, make the house feel like a home. This is probably more so the case if you live in a shared house, as you can make your bedroom a complete sanctuary, away from other rooms that you might not be able to have much control over.
In the same study, the living room came up by just under half of the people, saying that is what made them feel completely at home. Slightly lower down the scale were personal touches like artwork painted by the children, along with things like fridge magnets and items stuck to the fridge, and having shows by the door. So what do you think it is for you that helps to make a house a home?
The study shows us that some key pieces of furniture can complete our homes for us, as well as little touches like hand-painted artwork in a picture frame or trinkets and magnets from travels and adventures. It is clear to see that when you have items in the home that you love, as well as things like a particular place that you always sit on the sofa, really play a part in creating those comforts of home. Plus, if you’re moving into a new home, for example, you can see that the living room and bedroom are the main rooms that you’ll want to work on when it comes to being cosy and homely.
Decorating The Home
How you decorate the home also plays a big part in making the house feel more like a home. Although many of us can feel like there is a never-ending to-do list when it comes to things in our home, how we decorate does make a difference. This can be one of the drawbacks to renting, as there may be limits to how much you can decorate, and as a result, can be why more renters don’t feel like the house is truly theirs, even temporarily.

Decorating to showcase your likes, preferences, and personality make a big difference too. This can be showcased through artwork in the home, personal trinkets and items, displaying favourite books, and other collections like coins, concert tickets, and travel money, to name a few. These show your personality, put your personal stamp on the home, and as a result, make it feel like home.
The Things That Make a House Feel Like a Home
One of the first things that keeps coming up as something that can help to make the house feel like a home is being able to sleep in your own bed. If you’ve ever been away and missed your own bed, then this just shows how important your bed is to you. Having a bed that is comfortable, personal, and styled in just the way that you want will make a difference to you in your life. If you don’t feel like this at the moment, then you could try getting a new bed or mattress to see if it makes a difference, or perhaps adding some extras to your bed like throws and pillows, to make it that little bit more comfortable and cosy.
Having photos on display in the home is another thing that helps to make the house a home. It showcases your personality and makes the whole space much more personal. If you currently feel like your home doesn’t give off this kind of vibe, then think about how many personal items there are in the house right now. When you just have generic art on the walls or very little on the walls anyway, then it can make the space feel quite sterile and not homely at all.

A photo wall is something that can make a difference if you want to change this, whether it is a wall in a room or photos going up the stairs. You can change them over time, of course, but it can make a difference to the feel of the home or for a particular room. Getting different sized photo frames and photos can help to give some more personality too and make for a more interesting-looking photo wall.
Speaking of more personal items, another idea to help to make your home feel more like a home is to have personal things on display. This could be a medal or certificate that you have achieved. It could be trinkets and souvenirs from your travels. It could also be a bookcase or a bookshelf that displays your favourite books. These are all things that help your home to stand out as your own, and shows off your personality and the things that you like and value.
Lighting in a home is so important. Natural lighting in a home is even more important, as we can thrive on natural light and it can do so much good for us. If you live in a naturally dark home, then it can be tough and can make the whole place feel less homely. In this case, getting plenty of lighting in the home, especially layered lighting, can really make a difference. That means that you not only have your main room light, but floor or table lamps, wall lamps, and others, so that you can create as much or as little lighting as you would like. This can help when you need to make a room much brighter, or when you want to make a room feel dimmer and more romantic. When you have enough lighting in the home, or the ability to change the level of lighting in the home, then it can impact the ambience so much.
What are the things that help to make your house feel like a home? It would be great to hear what you think. Although we can all differ in opinion, there are definitely a few things that we can all agree on that help to make our homes a home, and not a sterile-looking showhome.
Your Space
Bedrooms and living rooms, as well as kitchens, can be some of the places that help to make us most at home. However, with homely touches, things that we like and that display our personality, we can create a happy and comfortable environment at home, no matter what our situation is. Our homes are such an important space, which after the nearly two years that we have all experienced, we have spent more than ever in our homes. By choosing some high-quality furniture and items in our home, it will help them to last and last and make sure that you have that cosy, comfortable, and homely feeling for longer.
