Well, it’s pretty obvious here that kitchens feel familiar. Well, they should after all considering the fact that they’re used every day, so it’s easy to assume everything in them is safe by default. Like, the stove is on, the pan heating up, extractor humming away in the background. All very normal. But that familiarity is exactly why some fire hazards get completely overlooked. Sure, when it comes to emergencies in your house, like a lot of them can be obvious (not always, but often), but when it comes to anything in the kitchen, well, you usually don’t know until it’s too late.

And well, the problem is, it’s just not the obvious stuff everyone warns about, but the quiet risks that build up over time and don’t look dangerous until they really are. It’s not even things that the average person knows about, either. Like, if you ran a restaurant, sure, you’d know, but your average person wouldn’t.

Grease Builds Up Pretty Fast

So it’s best tos start here because a lot of people don’t seem to be all that familiar with grease fries. Alright, so grease doesn’t just live in frying pans. It floats. It sticks. It settles in places people don’t really look at. And of course, over time, it coats surfaces, filters, and hidden parts of the kitchen that never get wiped down.

As you already know here, grease is flammable, but greasy film is highly flammable too. And yeah, it doesn’t take a dramatic accident for it to become a problem. Basically, just one flare-up, one overheated pan, and there’s pretty much fuel where there shouldn’t be any at all. This is especially risky in busy kitchens where cooking happens all day, and cleaning focuses on what’s visible. You have to scrub every nook and cranny, even the spots you didn’t know existed, which, yes, sounds counterintuitive. 

Ventilation Systems aren’t Self-Cleaning

Extractors do a great job of pulling smoke and heat away, so people assume they’re taking the danger with them. But of course, all that grease has to go somewhere. It doesn’t disappear. It collects inside the hood, the filters, and the ductwork. Sometimes people clean the cover of the vent, but a lot of people don’t even know about that. 

But again, unless you’ve worked in hospitality, chances are, you just don’t know that kitchen extract cleaning is pretty much a necessity because there’s a fire hazard if it’s not done. You can DIY it, or go to professionals (which is safest) to get this done. 

Electrical Overload is More Common than it Looks

Well, obviously, kitchens are going to be full of appliances. There’s the standards in it like the ovens, microwaves, fryers, airfryers, dishwashers, coffee machines,  and they’re all pulling power at the same time. It’s honestly pretty easy to overload sockets without realising it, especially when extension leads and adapters start creeping in. 

But the problem here is that cables heat up, sometimes, and plugs even loosen. It’s absolutely terrifying to think about, but you have to be careful because electrical faults are a major cause of kitchen fires, and they’re rarely this big a major thing before they fail. It can be hard to see signs immediately, so the best thing you can do is just not overload. 

Clutter Creates Fire Pathways

Okay, but what type of clutter here, though? While sure, it sounds harmless, but clutter makes fires spread faster. But in what way? Well, tea towels near burners, cardboard packaging stored too close to heat, napkins or something that are placed in areas they should (including hot pans), these little things do cause issues.
