When children are newly born, their parents are the most important people in their lives. This continues as they grow from infants to toddlers, as they are completely dependent on their parents for survival and love.

As good parents, you want to encourage your child to grow and develop socially, emotionally, mentally, and physically. This will involve introducing them to other trusted adults and children their own age. You might take your toddler to preschool to get them started.

It can be a bittersweet experience to see your child grow up and become less dependent on their parents. They will spend more time with friends. But even as their needs change, you should still be there to support them and guide them.

Why It Matters

Your children will come across different challenges as they grow up, and it’s important that they feel as though they can rely on you as parents. If you have a close relationship with your children, you will also be their first port of call when it comes to things that worry them. You will be more approachable.

This is beneficial for your children’s emotional well-being and, in some cases, their physical safety. Not only this, but it can be a joy to see what kind of person they grow up to be, and the only way to have a front-row seat to that is to be there for them.

Relax With Them

One of the best ways to connect with your children is to spend time with them. Rather than a “weekly lecture”, you should spend relaxed time with them. Introduce them to your hobbies and take an interest in what they enjoy. Encourage them, especially if they really enjoy something.

For example, if your child likes golfing, then golf camp can give you an opportunity to bond with them, while they also meet other children with similar interests.

Screen Time

Screen time can be a huge hurdle to overcome. The best way to control screen time is to set boundaries early on. Introduce your children to other ways to pass the time.

Some parents fear that setting limits make them the bad guy, but screens aren’t necessarily the enemy. You can even use them to connect with your children and other family members. Video calls allow people to hang out from long distances.

If your children like playing video games, then you can join them. After all, if they are taking part in your hobbies, it’s only fair that you join them in theirs.

Practical Life Lessons

When your children get older, the majority of their education will be handled by their school. If you homeschool your children, then you’ll still be aware of the difference between curriculum lessons and life lessons.

It is always your responsibility to make sure that your children are prepared for life. Getting them involved in age-appropriate limited chores like cooking and cleaning is a good way to teach them life skills. You also need to teach them how to manage finances and take care of themselves as adults. For more tips on how to develop a healthy parent and child relationship, take a look here.
