Non-UPF Wraps: Your Ultimate Guide to UPF-Free Wraps

If you’ve recently started avoiding ultra-processed foods, you’ve probably Googled things like “UPF-free wraps” or “non UPF wraps”… and ended up more confused than when you started. And for good reason. Wraps are often marketed as a “healthy” alternative to bread, but many supermarket tortillas are actually ultra-processed foods (UPFs), packed with additives, preservatives and emulsifiers. It’s not good, is it?

Non-UPF Wraps & UPF-Free Wraps

But with some research, you absolutely can enjoy wraps without UPFs, and they are easier to find or simpler to make than you think. The other good news is that I’ve done the legwork to provide you a easy to read list of UPF free wraps, so you can pop these in your basket. I’ve also pulled together some amazing recipes, so if you like, you can try making them for yourself.

What Are Non-UPF Wraps?

Let’s simplify this. Ultra-processed foods are industrial products made with additives and ingredients you wouldn’t typically use at home. These are things like emulsifiers, flavour enhancers, and preservatives.

A non-UPF wrap is made from real and recognisable ingredients. You’ll find these are typically 4–6 ingredients and something you could realistically make in your own kitchen.

A UPF wrap usually contains emulsifiers (e.g. E472e), preservatives, modified starches or oils and added sugars or flavourings. A good rule of thumb is if it sounds like a chemistry experiment, it’s probably UPF.

Why Most Wraps Are Ultra-Processed

Here’s the slightly annoying truth. Most supermarket wraps are designed for a long shelf life, soft texture which comes from these added ingredients, and they have been mass-produced. That’s why they are cheap and readily available.

One UK nutritionist found a typical supermarket wrap had 15 ingredients, compared to just 4–5 in a non-UPF version. It’s eye-opening, really. That’s why so many people searching for “non UPF wraps UK” struggle to find good options.

What Ingredients Should Be in a Non-UPF Wrap?

The ideal ingredient list:

Flour (white or wholemeal)
Water
Salt
Olive oil (optional)

That’s about it. Anything much beyond that? Start questioning why there are additional ingredients.

Are Corn Tortillas Non-UPF?

Good question, and this is a bit of a grey area. Traditional corn tortillas (made with masa harina, water, salt) are usually non-UPF, but supermarket versions are often not. So I suggest you always check the label.

Why People Are Switching to UPF-Free Wraps

This isn’t just a trend. It’s a shift as people get more aware of what they put in their bodies. UPFs now make up a huge portion of UK diets, and are associated with various health concerns in research. People are realising “Healthy-looking” foods can still be ultra-processed. Low-fat, high-protein options aren’t always healthy options. In fact, often that’s the opposite. Ingredient quality matters more than marketing.
