Tell-tale Signs You’re Ready to Buy Your First Home
This is a collaborative post
Getting your foot on the property ladder is a major life accomplishment and one that should be celebrated. It is also a huge decision that will impact your life and finances over the long term, so you must know that you are in a good position to buy. So, what are the tell-tale signs that you are ready to buy your first home?
You are Happy in Your Job
First, it is important that you are happy in your job and have stability. You are entering a long-term financial commitment, so you don’t want to find yourself looking for work in a few months. This means that you need to enjoy your work, have stability and career development opportunities with a steady income that will allow you to afford mortgage repayments and other financial costs.
You Have Savings/Access to a Deposit
There are a lot of things to consider when you’re a first-time buyer, especially when it comes to money. You need to make sure that you have enough to put down as a deposit (at least 5% but the bigger the better). In addition to this, you should also have savings left over so that you can manage in an emergency (6 months worth of expenses is a good amount).

You’ve Got No Problem Paying Rent
Renting can be a good opportunity to test that you can buy with a shorter contract. If you have rented and never had any trouble paying rent each month, then this is a good sign that you are ready to buy.
You’ve Found Somewhere You Want to Live
Deciding where to live is a major decision. If you have found a certain city or location that you have fallen in love with or you are happy where you currently are then this is a positive sign that you are ready to buy. You don’t want to buy somewhere only to find yourself miserable a year later, so it might be worth renting for a year if moving to a new location.
You’re Ready to Settle
Buying a home is a big commitment and if you are ready to settle down then this is another positive sign. Obviously, you can move house at any point but it is a major process to go through that you do not want to be doing every couple of years.
You Have Paid Off Debts & Have a Good Credit Score
It is also important to clear any debt (not including student loans) before entering such a large financial agreement. Additionally, you need a good credit score to get approved for a mortgage so you should always check this well in advance of making an application.
These are all positive signs that you are ready to take the plunge and get your foot on the property ladder.
