What Should be on Your Checklist Before a Long Road Trip

Summer is here and many of us are packing up the car and taking it to the motorway rather than jetting off abroad. A recent survey by Travelodge found that 85% of the 71% of Brits planning on a holiday in 2021 were doing so in the UK. We all love a good road trip but like any other holiday, they require a pretty decent level of organisation, especially if you want to make sure things run smoothly, so a road trip checklist is a good idea.
To help you prep for your next big trip, here are five useful tips that will help you prep the right way.
Organise Your Packing
All too often, as we load up the motor with luggage, tents and other bits and bobs, we tend to throw them in without any consideration. Instead, think about which items you may need during the journey and leave these till last. You’ll be thanking yourself when you don’t need to unload the entire car to find the snacks or your directions.
Car Maintenance
There’s nothing worse than getting stuck on the hard shoulder when you should be out enjoying your time off. To make sure that your car isn’t hit by maintenance problems on holiday in the UK, consider booking in a service and check your car tyres to ensure they’re inflated well and pass the 20p test. And to make sure you can get out of trouble in the event of a breakdown, consider AA or RAC membership and invest in a tool kit and jack so you can swap out a burst tyre.
Plenty Of Water
With heatwaves becoming more common, packing plenty of water is an absolute must when travelling with the family. Either get everyone their own water bottle or invest in a large water carrier in the boot – particularly useful if you’re heading on a much longer drive into the countryside or are wild camping for a few days.
Wipes And Toilet Roll
You can never predict the state of public toilets, especially those in rural or honeypot areas. To keep clean and fresh, bring along some toilet roll in the car and a pack of wet wipes – the latter of which is perfect for cleaning your room or camping kit up too.
Snacks Galore
If you’re travelling off-piste away from services, ditch expensive restaurants and cafes and bring along snacks in the car instead. Make sure that there’s enough to go around and everyone’s tastes are catered for. This will you’ll definitely avoid the lion’s share of ‘are we there yets’ from the kids.
