Finding more space at home seems like an unending and fruitless task. As we consume more (yes, all of us), we simply run out of places to put things. However, daily life, work and family demand more of a finite space. So, here are some suggestions for freeing up your home.

This is a collaborative post.

Declutter to Make More Room

Pretty much the first thing that comes to mind is decluttering. Most of us have too much stuff, and some of it is pretty useless. So why hang on to it? Clutter attracts more dust, makes for cosy bug hotels, and appears untidy. If you must hang onto something, self storage units are an excellent place for sentimental, collectable or expensive items. But anything else can just as easily go in the skip. It’s surprising how much space you free up just by getting rid of your junk!

Make Some Extra Cash

Of course, not everything is junk. It’s just that you probably have a ton of stuff you no longer use or need. Yeah, that means the exercise bike! However, there are always people who can use the things you no longer need. And they are willing to pay good money for used items. Take stock of your unused items and see what you can get rid of. You might be able to make a lot of cash selling these on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, which can go towards any decorating.

Clear the Area for More Space at Home

Decluttering is one thing, and it can be a massive help. But it can be more rewarding to just start from scratch when you need space. Almost 80% of homeowners believe that modern homes don’t have enough space. So what can you do? Clearing out the area allows you to clean, decorate and add things in a more productive manner. As a result, you will make better use of the available space, which is ideal for rooms such as a home office if you keep it clean and tidy.

Decorate with Storage in Mind

If you are thinking about decorating a room after decluttering and removing everything, you must also think about how the area will be used. When decorating, think about what you need and how you can store things. For example, there are many smart storage solutions available to make a room feel larger. This includes hollow-bottomed furniture, for example. Shelving in nooks and crannies also makes excellent use of vertical space and frees up the room for use.

Make Mindful Purchases

All your efforts will be for nothing if you fall back into old habits and just clutter up the space again! This is why being mindful is important. Mindfulness extends to every part of life, including making purchases. Before you buy something for a room, think about the impact it will have. For example, even a lamp can cause issues. You may have to rearrange wires, move something to place it and match the colours to the style of the room, throwing off everything in the space!

Summary

Decluttering is often the first step when you need more space at home. However, clearing the area outright gives you a blank canvas with which to play. Of course, just adding more stuff afterwards defeats the point. So be mindful about the things you buy to place within a room.
