Working From Home Made Easy

Ad: This is a collaborative post

Working from home is the new normal for some of us. Thanks to the ongoing disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, employers, employees, and startup business owners alike are having to adapt to a new working situation.

If you’re working from home, be that because of the pandemic or because you normally work from home anyway, you will understand how difficult it can be. It can be hard to stay focussed when you have a lot of distractions around you, and it can sometimes be quite isolating.

Still, there are things you can do to make working from home easier for you, and these include the following.

#1: Set up your own working space

Oh sure, you could work from your sofa, but this might not be the best place to perch yourself if you want to stay in work mode. The same applies to your dining room table, as you might only be tempted by the fridge (and the contents within) on too regular a basis. Instead, try to find a place in your home that feels like a workplace. It isn’t always possible, we know, but if you do have that space, be it a spare room or a corner that can become exclusively yours, use it. Set yourself up with a desk, ergonomic chair, and other home office essentials. By doing so, you will have all you need to ensure your head remains in work mode and not relaxation mode.

#2: Download the tools that will help you

There are apps and pieces of software for almost anything these days, and these include those products that will help you manage your workload at home. Evernote is great for leaving yourself reminders and to-do notes, for example, and Slack will let you communicate with your colleagues who might also be working at home. If you’re an employer, you might want to use Sling’s employee schedule maker software and app, and if you’re a solo business owner, you might want to use QuickBooks to manage your accounts. There is much more you can download to make your life easier when working from home, so browse your computer or phone app store, and commit to further research online.

#3: Set boundaries

To be more productive, you need to set yourself boundaries. You need to remind yourself of the distractions that could eat into your day, such as the TV, your mobile phone, and the lure of Facebook. By setting boundaries for yourself, you should be able to get more work done if you can avoid those things that could waste your time. You need to set boundaries for others too. While you should spend time with your family and friends, there are also those times in the day when you don’t want them to interrupt you. So, let them know your schedule, and even pop a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on your door if you think that will help you.

#4: Be social

Okay, so we have just told you to set boundaries from social interactions, but there are times when you should make the effort to speak to others. You might have to anyway for work purposes, but you might also want to communicate with others if your feelings of isolation make you work less productively. So, schedule in time in the day to spend with the people you are close to, and say hello to any your other home-working colleagues on Messenger or face-to-face on Zoom. You don’t need to spend an age in the company of others, but a little bit of social interaction might lift your spirits and make working from home more palatable for you.

#5: Practice self-care

When you’re working from home, it can be easy to let aspects of self-care fall by the wayside. You might binge eat the foods from your fridge while you’re working, for example, or you might even skip lunch if you don’t have anybody around to remind you to take a break. You might skip out on physical activity too, as you won’t need to walk to and from work, and you won’t have access to the exercise areas provided by an employer. Be sensible then, and make your self-care a priority. Eat healthily, take regular breaks, and find ways to exercise at home. You will stay on top of your health if you do, and with your renewed energy levels, you will also work more productively during the day.

Some people love working from home, other people hate it! Still, whatever the case for you, these tips should make your life easier. We certainly hope so, so consider our suggestions if you are currently working from the comfort of your own property.
