London’s Sky Garden is one of the more surprising places to go and visit when you are in the capital. Surprising for a number of reasons.
It’s a large roof garden located on top of a very famous commercial building in London.
The building is affectionately known as The Walkie Talkie. But officially it is known as 20 Fenchurch Street.
It’s one of London’s free attractions. Yes it’s free. You do have to be quite quick to get tickets as they release them on a weekly basis for the following week, but it’s not impossible to get them.
On arrival you must present your ticket (either printed or on your phone) and you’ll go through airport style security checks. Once you are up the top of the building, you’ll be amazed at the expanse of the space up there. It’s light and lofty. There’s plenty of green foliage to wander past and enjoy, if you are lucky some of it might even be in bloom.
There is a restaurant at the Sky Garden, so it would be perfect if you were celebrating a special occasion. But if you are just on a casual visit, there’s a couple of places serving teas, coffees and something a bit harder if you wish. The views from the top are amazing and you don’t appreciate how much building work is going on in London until you are up there! It’s very peaceful and I saw a number of people just sitting and taking in the view and relaxing for a good while whilst we were there. We were some of those people…
There is an outside deck as well, right at the front of the top of the building. Unfortunately for us, it was a very windy day so they had closed the deck area as I expect it was too dangerous to go out there. But we can always visit again, and hopefully on a less blustery day.
We went for our visit to the Sky Garden not long before sunset, so we were able to take in the view across London as the day turned into night. When the city started to look twinklier and twinklier - that view is really magic. I would highly recommend checking out whether you can get tickets next time you are planning a day out in London. It’s such a lovely structure and the garden inside is really peaceful and beautiful. If you’ve already visited, what did you think? Would you visit again?
