Squeezing More Storage Space Out of Your Cluttered Home

This is a collaborative post

A cluttered home can be difficult to work with, especially if you’re struggling to keep things from spilling out of the closet and storage cabinets. If you ever find yourself having to store things outside of a storage area, then it’s probably time to start thinking about expanding your storage options or potentially moving into a larger home. Of course, there’s always the option of decluttering your house as well, but that might be more difficult than it seems.

Either way, here are a couple of options for helping you squeeze a bit more storage space out of your cluttered home.

Storage Space

Consider Using More Wall Space

Walls are a great place to add a bit more storage space, especially if you’ve got a couple of empty walls that look really bare. The best way to do this would be to add some shelves to a wall. It doesn’t take much time or money to add them to a wall and you get plenty of extra storage space. The only downside to this is that you have a bit more to clean because dust tends to accumulate on shelves quite easily. This problem is compounded if you already have quite a dusty home, so do keep this in mind before you add more shelves.

Change Out Existing Storage Solutions For Something Better

There’s a good chance that you can swap out some of your existing storage solutions for something a bit better. For instance, wardrobes are typically installed in a home as they’re being built, but they’re not always optimal when it comes to space. Instead, you could consider installing a mirrored sliding wardrobe or even build a completely bespoke wardrobe that fits your exact needs. This will help you make the most of your wardrobe space, giving you plenty of extra room for your belongings.

Make Use Of Your Floor Space

Floor space is also important to use if you’re looking to maximize the amount of storage space in your home. A good place to start would be the area under your bed. This is a prime location for extra boxes to keep things like bedding, linen, and even clothes. You could also add freestanding bookcases to various areas of your home. While it might make your home feel a bit more cluttered, the extra vertical storage space can help free up other parts of your home.

Make Good Use Of The Space In Your Garden

If you’ve got a large garden then it’s the perfect place to add some extra storage space. You could try to revamp your garden and add a shed, but do keep in mind that outdoor storage spaces are a little more vulnerable to the elements. But if you’re fine with this or if you plan to add some shelving and storage boxes in your shed, then it’s the perfect place for long-term storage or storing items that you don’t always need. It’s also a great way to clean up your garden if you’re used to leaving power tools and other items around.

Under-Floor Storage Might Be An Option

Under-floor storage isn’t as common these days due to the way homes are built, but some people do still enjoy having a storage space underneath their floor. It’s usually accessed with a hatch and can be a good option for hiding things that you don’t normally use.

Pack Things A Little More Tightly

Another good option for squeezing out a bit more storage space is to pack things a little more tightly. This sounds really obvious when you think about it, but there are probably plenty of areas in your home where your stored items aren’t packed very well. It takes a bit of organisation to do this, but you can definitely pack a few more items into your storage areas if you take a bit more care with how you put things together. Take note of big items with weird shapes, or fitting things like CDs and DVDs into appropriately sized boxes.

Declutter Your Home Whenever You Get An Opportunity

Lastly, don’t forget that decluttering your home is always an option. If you’ve been holding on to some items for years and you’ve not checked on them for a really long time, then it’s probably safe to let them go unless they’re extremely sentimental about them. In some cases, you could just store them in a long-term storage facility instead. This might be more costly, but it’ll definitely help clear up some space in your home.
