We all know that as we get older our bodies age, but have you ever thought about your brain getting older too? It’s important to think about ways to keep your brain young so that you can enjoy an active mind as you get older. There are lots of ways that you can help to keep your mind sharp, so I’ve put a few of my favourite ways together.

Get Enough Sleep

Getting regular sleep of around 6 – 8 hours is really important to recharge your brain (and your body). Constantly getting less sleep than required will age your brain more quickly and you’ll find it harder to concentrate. However, there are natural ways to support your sleep patterns. Maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, and managing stress are all crucial. In addition, if you’re looking for potential supplements to aid sleep, you can explore and buy 5-HTP supplement (koop 5-HTP supplement), which can help to support sleep regulation.

Play Active Mind Games

Doing sudoku, jigsaws or even games like solitaire will keep your mind sharper for longer. This online version of the popular game solitaire is great for not only relaxing but also using the grey matter. If you aren’t a fan of solitaire, you could try some of the other card games on offer. I’m a fan of gin rummy or blackjack. Playing games which use your brain are good for helping keep your mind active.

Get Some Exercise

You’d think this was a post about keeping your body young, but no, it’s about keeping your brain young. Studies have shown that getting regular exercise as we get older is also a good thing for our brains. Regular exercise like gardening or dancing can help slow down our brain shrinkage. Even as we get older, there are lots of exercise options that can suit us – swimming, walking and even vigorous housework can all help.

Do Things Outside Of Routine

Doing the same thing day in, day out can be bad for our brains. Try doing different things on different days. Even simple things like brushing your teeth using the other hand, cooking a new recipe from scratch, going for a walk following a different route or even learning a new skill are all great ways of shaking things up and engaging our brains to help them stay younger for longer.

Stay Socially Connected

Having good and regular social connections is extremely important for staying young as far as brains are concerned. Particularly if the people you are spending time with can make you laugh. Laughter is really good for your mental health and well-being and it can also help your brain to stay younger for longer. So surround yourself with funny friends and you’ll have a healthier brain for longer.

Eat Well

We all know that a healthy, well-balanced diet is good for your physical well-being, but did you know that a good diet is key to keeping brain diseases at bay. A diet rich in vegetables, legumes and healthy fats such as olive oil and oily fish is very good for keeping your brain young and well. Following a Mediterranean diet is not only good for your waistline, but it’s also good for your brain too.

Following some of this advice will help you keep your brain younger for longer. I’d love to know what you also do to keep your mind healthy so that your brain will age more slowly.
