Why You Should Holiday in Greece

If you’ve ever been to Greece, you’ll read this and (hopefully) agree with me. If you’ve not been to Greece yet, you’ll read this and want to book a Greek holiday. Greece is an awesome place. I’d love to go back again soon as I think it’s a wonderful place with lots of lovely things to see and do. This post has been commissioned by Voyage Privee, so hopefully, I can inspire you to book a break based on my top five reasons to visit Greece.
Architecture
You can’t go to Greece without immersing yourself in the amazing architecture. Whether it’s the Greek mainland or the Islands, you’ll be spoilt for choice on what to see. The Parthenon in Athens is probably the most famous temple, but you shouldn’t rule out the others. The Temple of Apollo, also on the mainland, is pretty special too. The Temple of Artemis located on the island of Corfu is also a stunning example of Greek architecture.
Food & Drink
Surely this is one of the main reasons people visit Greece? The food and drink are outstanding. The starters, the mains, the desserts, the wines, the snacks. Need I go on? Olives, pasta, the array of delicious grilled fish served with salad, beautiful rich meat dishes, cheeses. Yum yum! If you haven’t eaten well in Greece, then you’ve done something wrong. When we visited, we tried kumquat ice cream. I’ll be honest and say that wasn’t a highlight. But as always with these things, you’ve got to try the local delicacy.
The People
The Greek people are fantastic. So friendly, so welcoming. It’s one of the reasons people visit Greece again and again. Everyone I’ve met in Greece was really helpful and friendly. The shopkeepers and restauranteers are warm and welcoming. The locals are kind and helpful. Literally, one of the most likeable cultures going.
I should also include cats in the people bracket. There are tonnes of cats in Greece – mainly strays. It is more than likely that you will be befriended by one during your holiday. I think most stray cats are quite friendly and do well out of tourists feeding them. But it’s up to you whether you indulge your furry friend or not.
The Scenery
Mountains, beaches, greenery, lakes, seas. You name it, Greece has it all. Each of the Greek Islands has its own personality when it comes to what makes up their scenery, but they are all stunning in their own way. It’s such diverse terrain that the mountains are only a short drive from the sun-drenched coastlines. Superb! It’ll suit all of your holiday party.
There are parts of Greece that are so iconic, for example, Santorini, that their photos are instantly recognised by people who have never even set foot in Europe.
The Weather
The summers are blisteringly hot. Perfect for topping up tans on a sun-kissed beach or enjoying a cool drink in the shade, out of the midday sun.
Out of peak season, it’s still lovely and warm, but you may hit a storm or two. If you are like me, you love a good storm and the ones across the coastlines of the Greek Islands can be pretty spectacular.
The sunrises and sunsets are awesome too. It’s well worth getting up for or hanging around a coastline in the evening for. What else would you add to the list above?
