I’m a bit of a foodie, and one of my favourite ways to spend quality time is outdoors, surrounded by nature, with a picnic. A romantic picnic date is one of my ultimate simple pleasures. There’s something magical about a picnic blanket, a picnic basket, and good food to share. If you’re planning one, I’d love to share my tips and some lovely suggestions for the best foods for a picnic date. Whether it’s a warm day in your local park or you are heading further afield to some botanical gardens, or perhaps even a hot day by the beach, these ideas will help you pull together a spread that’s both delicious and romantic. Best Foods For A Picnic Date
When I plan a picnic date, I always think about:
Transport & temperature: Foods that can be kept chilled with ice packs or that taste great at room temperature.
Ease: Finger foods or things easy to eat without much fuss (no mess, fewer utensils).
Romantic touches: Something special like a bottle of wine or sparkling non-alcoholic alternative (elderflower is always lovely), a charcuterie board, fresh fruit, and something sweet for your sweet tooth.
Simple yet tasty: Combining classic staples (like pasta salad, potato salad, egg salad) with fresh elements (fresh fruit, red onions, herbs) to make things pop.
My Go-to Foods For A Great Picnic Date
Here are my favourite foods to pack for a picnic date.
Pasta Salad
One of my absolute best picnic foods. Penne or fusilli with cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, herbs or pesto and maybe olives. A squeeze of lemon. It holds up well and is super yummy!
Potato salad
If you make it with something sturdy. I’d suggest not too much mayo if it’s a hot day, it’ll be delicious sitting on the blanket. Also adds a lovely richness; pairs well with finger sandwiches and cold meats.
Egg salad
Especially if you like a mild flavour. Hard-boiled eggs, a little mustard, maybe chopped red onions or chives. Works beautifully in sandwiches or on crackers.
Fruit salad
Fresh fruit is one of the best ways to finish a main course. You could always mix it up with a watermelon salad. It’s simply watermelon with mint, grapes, and sliced peaches. Super refreshing and always a hit. Perfect for a romantic meal outdoors.
Caprese salad/skewers
Mozzarella, tomato, basil, maybe a balsamic drizzle. If on skewers, they’re like little bites. These are great as finger foods.
Mains and Sandwiches
Chicken salad or chicken salad sandwiches are always a hit. Grilled or roasted chicken mixed with a loose dressing, maybe some celery or spinach. Put in mini croissants or in wraps. Lovely for a date night style picnic.
Smoked salmon & cream cheese are a rich, elegant option. On bagels or pumpernickel. Add thin slices of red onion, capers, perhaps a bit of dill. I’d suggest keeping your salmon cool with an ice pack.
One of my favourite romantic picnic ideas is a charcuterie board. Fill your board with a variety of cheeses, soft, hard, maybe goat or feta cheese, cured meats, crackers, olives, and some nuts and grapes. Easy way to graze and savour together.
Mini quiche or frittata wedges are great because they can be served warm or at room temperature, can be made in advance, and feel a bit more elevated. I’d suggest using mini silicone muffin cases to make them effortlessly ahead of time.
Snacks and Sides
You can’t go wrong with fresh fruit. Grapes, berries, apple slices, orange segments and melon. It’ll look even nicer if you can make fruit kebabs or have a fruit salad with a bit of citrus or mint.
I love crudités and dips. Go with sliced cucumber, carrot, red bell pepper and maybe snap peas. Team with hummus or a bean dip. It’s healthy, refreshing and easy to nibble on.
Arm yourself with some good bread, a crusty baguette, focaccia or some sourdough crackers. Pair these with cream cheese or a spread, maybe something pesto-based. Bread, cheese and fruit are one of the best combinations.
For the sweet tooth, I always include something like chocolate chip cookies, brownies, flapjacks or maybe tarts or mini pies. Something that travels well and gives that final delicious note.
Drinks
A bottle of white wine or rosé is always nice. If you want non-alcoholic drinks, why not try sparkling water, flavoured water, lemonade or iced tea? There’s quite a selection of adult cold drinks, which are lovely for a picnic. On hot days, cold drinks are a must. Use water bottles that keep cold (or frozen bottles that melt slightly).
Dessert wines can be nice with sweet treats. If you bring wine, you will need glasses, a tumbler and perhaps a wine cooler bag or padded pocket.
Don’t forget hot drinks if the evening turns cool. A thermos of tea, coffee or indulgent hot chocolate always feels cosy.

My Top Tips
Here are some of my top tips that I’ve learned from my own picnics over the years.
Use ice packs, especially for dairy-based foods (cream cheese, chicken salad, potato salad). If it’s a warm day or hot weather, ice packs (or frozen bottles) make the difference between tasty and unsafe.
I’d suggest choosing a picnic spot with shade, or at least partial cover, and somewhere lovely. Botanical gardens, local parks, maybe somewhere with picnic tables. The environment adds hugely to comfort & romance.
Pack a good picnic blanket so you can lounge comfortably. Sometimes picnic tables are great, but nothing beats sitting together on a soft blanket under trees.
It may be easier to keep foods separated until you arrive at your picnic spot. Don’t mix dressings or sauces until just before eating. Bring containers with tight lids.
You’ll want to bring utensils, plates and napkins. I always pack a roll of kitchen roll and an extra bag for rubbish. Quite often there’s nowhere nearby to put your rubbish, so you’ll need to carry it until you find a bin. Even if you mostly have finger foods, some things will need forks and knives. Biodegradable or reusable is even better.
If you are going for a romantic touch or two, add a small wooden board, a nice cutting board for the charcuterie, colourful fruit, maybe even flowers. It’s a cute picnic date idea that makes food feel special.

Always plan a dessert. Something sweet but sturdy. Chocolate chip cookies travel well. If you find some are slightly underbaked, you might think, can you put cookies back in the oven to finish baking them? Fruit salad or fresh fruit, and maybe a bit of cream or sweet dip. You can make or buy meringues and make a deconstructed Eton mess.

I like thinking in menus so I don’t forget anything. Here are a couple of my sample picnic date menus.

Best Foods For A Picnic Date – Menu B: Romantic & Elevated Picnic Meal

Special Touches
Pick a romantic picnic spot. Maybe local gardens, by a lake, or somewhere scenic in your local park. Sunset picnics are pretty magical.
Bring something fun to do. Perhaps a board game, a speaker for gentle music, or some battery-powered candles or lights if you are staying past sunset.
If the weather is bad, lay a blanket on the floor, dim the lights, and bring all the picnic food indoors. This is an at-home picnic, and it’s just as much fun.
Why not include seasonal and local food and drink? Fresh fruit that’s ripe in your area, bread from a local bakery, and cheeses from local producers. There is a lot to be found at local farm shops.
A charcuterie board layout is always a win. Load it with meats, cheeses, olives, fruit, nuts, chutney and crackers.
If it’s going to be hot, you could freeze some of your water bottles. They act as ice packs, and then you can drink them as they melt.
For the perfect dessert, it’s always nice to present a little dessert in a jar. Get creative with a layered pudding or cheesecake. Serve with a teaspoon. It’s cute and serves well.
Foods to Avoid
To keep your picnic date from going sideways, I’d suggest steering clear of very runny sauces or dressings. Foods that melt quickly in hot temperatures. Things like chocolate and some cheeses will melt unless you have good cold storage. It might be a good idea to limit anything too fragile or that wilts easily after dressing. Things like leafy greens and delicate herbs can go soggy, unless you’re adding dressing at the last minute.
