Good Night Routines

During this challenging time, it’s really important to look after yourself and one of the ways you can really help yourself is to establish a good night routine. This will help you feel better, sleep well and set you up for the day ahead.

I’m a big fan of a good night routine and here are my tips for establishing one.

Declutter Your Mind

If things are playing on your mind before you go to sleep, write them down and agree with yourself that you’ll tackle them in the morning. That way you can go to sleep knowing that they aren’t buzzing around your head. Also if they are complex, they’ll be easier to tackle when you are fresh in the morning.

Check Ahead

I always find having a final check of my following day’s schedule really helps me. That way that early breakfast meeting isn’t a surprise when I log on to my computer. It also helps you wake up raring to go.

Look After Yourself

A good hygiene ritual is important to any good night routine. Clean your teeth, take off your make up, cleanse your face, or have a shower. Whatever it is, make sure you look after body before you go to bed.

Preparation

If you make preparation part of your good night routine, you’ll feel less stressed and more ready for the day ahead. You could lay out the clothes you are going to wear the following day, make your breakfast and lunch in advance. Even if you are going to be working from home, there are still advantages to making a packed lunch and popping it in the fridge.

You can also consider the hygiene aspect of your day when preparing the night before. If you know you’re close to getting your period, a tampon subscription means you won’t have a last-minute panic or run to the shops at 6 AM. The same goes for toothpaste and any medication you will need. These ideas are small but effective, and they can help contribute to excellent preparation which means you can start your day right, rather than doing a mad dash to put everything in order and risk being late for work.

Eat Early

I know it’s not always possible to eat early, but if you can help it, don’t be eating your evening meal too close to bedtime. The digestion of this may well keep you up during the night when your body and your organs should be resting.

Cut the Caffeine

Don’t drink caffeinated drinks in the evening. I find if I make my last caffeinated drink around 5pm, it helps me get a better night’s sleep.

Ditch the Phone

The last thing you should be doing before you turn in for the night is checking your emails. Instead, read a chapter of your book, listen to some music, do a few yoga moves or simply lay back and reflect on the good things of the day. A few minutes of relaxation will help set you up for a good night’s sleep and will leave you recharged for the day ahead. What else would you add to a good night routine?

  1. Always great to have a reminder about better sleep hygiene! I really must get better at ditching my phone . . .

    1. It’s so hard to do though isn’t it? Especially when you remember that one last thing!!!

  2. I’m certainly struggling with a routine during lockdown which is being Made worse by being high risk and not leaving the house at all for nearly 10 weeks now. Every day is just merging in to one and none of them have any structure at all. I’ve got back to setting alarms and getting up and the same time each day, then planning my work day. The routine of getting up at my normal time has working wonders and the days aren’t seeming so long now either

    1. I bet that’s really hard. Sounds like you’ve got a great plan in place now though. It’s such a strange time for us all but I definitely think a routine helps somewhat.

  3. Some great suggestions. I also like doing meditations and listening to the sleepcasts on the Headspace app

    1. I haven’t used Headspace myself yet but I have heard lots of people say how good it is.

  4. Excellent list! I also find that spraying lavender oil on my pillow and drinking a calming herbal tea before bed really helps.

    1. Ooh. Yes! That would definitely help with a more relaxed sleep too.
