Help A Large Room Feel A Little Less Empty
This is a collaborative post
While it might, perhaps, be a little more common to have rooms that feel too small that you want to make feel larger, there is such a thing as a large room that feels like it has too much space, too. You don’t necessarily want to fill it up with clutter you’re not going to use, but there are plenty of ways that you can make better use of that space.
Don’t let it all be a single tone
In smaller rooms, keeping a concise colour tone can help avoid making it look too visually cluttered. However, the opposite is the case in a larger room. If it looks the same from wall to wall, it’s going to look empty and monotonous. To that end, you should consider a two-tone colour scheme for the wall and adapt to it with the furniture. You don’t need to go too complex, just an additional colour to your scheme.
Use a decorative table to fill corners
You don’t need a lot of clutter to fill in a space such as an empty, awkward corner. One piece of furniture, such as the right coffee table or end table can be the perfect thing for it. Choose a catchy design that fills the space visually and consider what you’re going to put on top of it. A potted houseplant is always an easy win but you can even design a little vignette to turn it into something of a focal point, too.
Zone it more effectively
You might have a large room that suits multiple uses and purposes. For instance, one end of the living room might work as a place to sit and relax or watch TV, but you might have a desk on the other end of the room where you do a little work while at home. Take a look at some room dividers ideas and make use of them to better zone your area. Not only can you eat up some of the empty space between those different zones, but you can create better barriers so that they don’t bleed into each other and provide a distraction.

Lighting layers are vital
In a smaller room, a single main light and a little bit of task lighting for one of the more practical spaces is going to be enough. In a larger room, you’re going to need more lighting, but you’re also going to have to light it more intentionally. To that end, learn about the different lighting layers you have, including accent, ambient, and task lighting. Light can help set the mood and provide a tone of warmth when the main light fixtures are turned off, without letting the room get too dark overall.
If you feel like there’s a little space that you’re not making great use of, then the tips above can help you use that whole room to great effect. Keep the tips above in mind as you consider how to tackle your largest problem.
