Home Design Trends For 2021

Let’s look at some of the upcoming trends in the home design world. 2020 has been a bizarre year where we’ve spent almost too much time at home! As a result, home improvements have gone through the roof as everyone looks for ways to avoid boredom. The funny thing about this is that it’s paved the way for some home design trends throughout the year. I’ve picked out a few that look set to stick around in 2021. Here’s my home trends for 2021.
Front Garden Living Areas
The best thing about having a garden is that you can extend your living space. Loads of people build patio or decking in their back gardens, filling them with outdoor furniture. I’m sure some of you have a nice outdoor table where the family ate over the summer months! Well, people have started taking this idea and moving it. Specifically, they’ve moved it to the front garden!
Okay, back garden living areas still exist, but front garden versions are growing in popularity. People have started putting a table and chairs in the front garden, maybe installing a patio, and so on. I’d say that this was probably down to everyone’s obsession with sitting outside during the various lockdowns. Want to get some fresh air and enjoy the sun? But what if your back garden was in the shade? People moved to the front, and now they’ve realized that front garden living areas are pretty cool!
Colourful Interiors
For many years, the colour seemed to fade away from our homes. If you look at any house for sale, you’ll see similar colour schemes across the board. A lot of places went for neutral tones of white, grey, and black. It was seen as the perfect idea because it meant that other elements of interior design were easy to match with neutral colours.
Now, things have started to change. A lot of people are opting for bolder colours in their interiors. Again, I think we can point the finger at lockdown and quarantines for this! You’ve been at home for months and all of your projects have been finished. You’re looking for something to do, so why don’t you paint the house? It’s a great way to pass the time, and I think loads of people started doing this. In turn, we all realized that adding some colour to a neutral home is a great idea. It can liven up your rooms and add more soul to your home.
Seriously, you’ll be amazed at what a splash of colour does to your house. It’s not until you add some colour that you realize this is what makes your house a home. It suddenly feels more welcoming and…unique!
Extensions
It might just be my neighbourhood, but lots of homeowners are getting extensions this year. When you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. It’s been a hard year for anyone that’s hoping to move home. Your plans were foiled, but it gave you a chance to reflect and look at your situation. Is it worth moving to a new house and dealing with all that stress?
For many, the answer was no! Instead, they opted for extensions to add more living space without the stress of moving. I know extensions have been around for years, but 2020 seems to have seen a slight boom in them. Perhaps we’ll see fewer people moving home in the next twelve months and more families extending their properties.
Repurposing Old Things
The final home design trend is one that everyone should get on board with. The regular readers among you will know I posted an article on reusing materials when home decorating. You take old things and use them to decorate your home. One of the best examples is an old sofa that you repurpose and use the materials to furnish a set of dining room chairs.
We live in a world that’s gradually becoming more eco-conscious. It’s only natural that this approach bleeds its way into home design. Instead of going out and getting a new pair of curtains, homeowners are repurposing old materials and using them. We’ll see more of this in 2021, and it will create unique home designs and benefit the environment.
